Internship Developer information

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as an internship developer?

To thrive as an Internship Developer, you need a foundational understanding of programming languages such as Java, Python, or JavaScript, along with coursework or a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, basic software development tools, and knowledge of databases are typically expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, eagerness to learn, and effective communication skills help interns collaborate and adapt quickly. These skills and qualities are essential for contributing meaningfully to projects and maximizing learning during the internship experience.

What kind of mentorship and learning opportunities can internship developers expect during their placement?

Internship Developers typically work closely with experienced software engineers and team leads who provide guidance through code reviews, pair programming, and regular check-ins. Most organizations assign interns to real-world projects, allowing them to contribute meaningful code while learning best practices in software development. It's common to attend team meetings, participate in sprint planning, and receive feedback on both technical and soft skills, which helps interns grow rapidly and gain a strong understanding of the professional development process.

What is an internship developer?

An Internship Developer is a student or recent graduate who works temporarily at a company to gain practical experience in software development. They assist professional developers with coding, testing, debugging, and documentation under supervision. The goal is to apply classroom knowledge to real-world projects, learn industry best practices, and build technical and teamwork skills that will help in future employment.

Job description

Functional Programmer/Software Engineer - Growth Phase Cloud SaaS for Municipal Finance

Who We Are:

Muniworth is a cloud-based SaaS startup in the growth phase, dedicated to empowering municipal utilities and governments with financial forecasting tools. Our platform enables local governments to achieve financial sustainability and make informed, data-driven decisions through robust modelling and compelling visuals.

About Our Approach:

We believe apparent correctness is not enough: code must respect underlying concepts, with types and named algorithms directly describing the domain. Great code is correct-by-construction, with any remaining uncertainties ruled-out by a suite of unit tests.

We strive to write pure, compositional code, with any inevitable impure code tamed by a rigid stratification of effects. To this end, we write TypeScript in a "Haskell-style" on the front end, and F# with an SQL database on the back end.

We have an enduring commitment to satisfy the needs of our rapidly growing business, understanding that great code is essential for our continued growth and success. We place a strong emphasis on domain modelling and understanding the nature of the problems that we are solving and will spend considerable time engaged with research and experimental development.

We have regular presentations, where engineers talk about whatever excites them, with previous topics including programming language theory, Master's Thesis presentations, World of Warcraft addons, and the philosophy of Machine Learning.

What You Will Do:

  • You will build and maintain both new projects and existing systems in a team environment, ensuring stability and long-term maintainability.
  • You will own projects from start to finish, learn and model the associated domain, specify the implementation design, and execute in accordance with your plan.
  • You will communicate progress and coordinate release efforts.
  • You will contribute to new and practical applications of functional programming.
  • You will raise the quality of code in our code base.
  • You will guide the evolution of our tech stack, tooling, and deployment processes to improve reliability and developer experience.
  • You will be fully engaged in an on-site environment in Victoria, BC, contributing to close collaboration and strong team culture.

Requirements

About You:

  • You are an experienced and enthusiastic functional programmer.
  • You have previously worked as a software engineer, either through an internship or full-time permanent employment.
  • You can collaborate closely with our lead engineers to build a rich understanding of the domain, flesh out domain models, and surface ambiguities.
  • You have excellent problem-solving abilities and strong communication skills, with the capability to articulate complex technical concepts clearly.
  • You have a bachelor’s degree or higher in computer science or a related field. Extensive experience and demonstrated competency will be considered equivalent.
  • You are a mission-driven individual who cares about their work having a real impact, who keeps the end user in mind throughout their work.
  • You are in search of an opportunity that can satisfy your drive for always expanding your knowledge and technical competence.
  • You are an opinionated team player that can complement the existing skill sets and perspectives of our team.

Application Process:

For your initial application, please submit your resume and complete the questionnaire. Cover letters are optional for applying to this role and present an opportunity for you to share more about yourself and why there may be a great fit. Please do not use AI if you decide to submit a cover letter; it is not a box that simply needs to be checked.

We will be reaching out to candidates in consideration within 1-2 business days from application submission to schedule a virtual screening interview. Arrangements for an in-person interview and technical assessment will be made thereafter. All interviews are conducted by the direct managers for the role.

Benefits

Why Join Us:

  • Competitive salary
  • Comprehensive health and dental benefits
  • Flexible work hours (40 hours/week), 100% on-site
  • Regular team-building events and social activities (optional but encouraged)
  • For an ideal candidate with exceptional experience, we are open to offering compensation beyond the listed salary range
