Internship Design System information

What is an internship design system?

An Internship Design System refers to an internship role focused on contributing to or maintaining a design system within a company or organization. Design systems are collections of reusable components, guidelines, and standards that help ensure consistency and efficiency in digital product design. As an intern in this field, you may assist with documenting components, creating design assets, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring that the system remains up-to-date and user-friendly. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in user interface (UI), user experience (UX), and front-end development. It offers valuable experience in how large-scale design projects are managed and implemented.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as an intern in a design system team?

As an intern on a design system team, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks, such as creating and maintaining UI components, documenting design patterns, and collaborating with designers and developers to ensure consistency across products. You may also contribute to accessibility improvements, participate in user testing, and help gather feedback from stakeholders. This role typically involves close teamwork and offers a great opportunity to learn about scalable design and cross-functional collaboration in a real-world setting.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship design system, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Design System Internship, you need foundational knowledge in UI/UX design principles, proficiency in design tools, and a relevant academic background such as graphic design or human-computer interaction. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and basic understanding of front-end frameworks or design tokens is typically required. Strong collaboration, attention to detail, and effective communication skills make an intern stand out in this role. These abilities are crucial for creating cohesive, scalable design assets and ensuring alignment across multidisciplinary product teams.

What is the difference between Internship Design System vs UX Designer?

AspectInternship Design SystemUX Designer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in design, UI/UX, or related fieldsBachelor's or master's in design, human-computer interaction, or related fields
Work EnvironmentInternship programs within companies, focusing on supporting design teamsFull-time or freelance roles in various industries, leading user experience projects
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies to train and evaluate interns in design systems and UI componentsUsed by organizations to improve product usability and user satisfaction

The Internship Design System role focuses on supporting and learning about design systems during an internship, often as part of a training program. In contrast, a UX Designer is a full-time professional responsible for creating and optimizing user experiences. While both roles involve design skills, the internship is more educational and entry-level, whereas the UX Designer role involves independent project management and strategic design decisions.

Job description

Build Your Future. Build the Skyline. Build with Enclos.

Are you currently enrolled in a 2-year or 4-year program and looking to take what you've learned in the classroom into the real world? The Drafting & Design Internship at Enclos is your chance to get hands-on with cutting-edge façade design while contributing to some of the most iconic buildings in the U.S.

This isn't a coffee-run internship. You'll be part of the team, learning, collaborating, and building the skills to jumpstart your career in architecture, drafting, or engineering.

About Enclos

Enclos is the leading façade contractor in the United States, specializing in the design, engineering, fabrication, and installation of custom curtainwall systems. With a legacy spanning generations, we've delivered hundreds of award-winning projects that have redefined what's possible in architecture, including:

  • World Trade Center Transit Center – New York City
  • Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture – Washington, D.C.
  • Allegiant Stadium – Home of the Las Vegas Raiders
  • 30 Hudson Yards – New York City
  • Chase Center – San Francisco

When you join Enclos, you don't just work on buildings - you help shape landmarks.

What You'll Experience

  • Start with Training: Learn the basics of curtainwall façade design, our engineering tools, and how departments work together.
  • Explore Engineering: Rotate through different focus areas - design, fabrication, BIM, kinetics, and thermal engineering.
  • Get Hands-On: Work with CAD programs, tackle real project work, and contribute to the technical design of monumental buildings.
  • Build Industry Knowledge: Sit in on project meetings and specialist team discussions for a behind-the-scenes look at how major construction projects come to life.
  • Shape Your Path: Toward the end of the program, focus on the areas that spark your interest most.

By the end of the internship, you'll walk away with a strong foundation in design and drafting, and insight into career opportunities with Enclos.

What You'll Gain

  • Practical experience with CAD programs like Inventor, Revit, AutoCAD, and Rhino.
  • Real project exposure - not just practice exercises.
  • Connections with engineers, designers, and construction professionals across multiple departments.
  • A head start on your career: successful interns may be invited back part-time during the school year or considered for full-time roles after graduation.

What We're Looking For

  • Current enrollment (or recent graduate) in a 2- or 4-year program in Architectural Drafting, Mechanical Drafting, Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Ability to read architectural or mechanical drawings/blueprints.
  • Experience with at least one CAD program (Inventor, Revit, AutoCAD, or Rhino preferred).
  • Curiosity, collaboration, and a passion for design and construction.

Program Details

  • Location: Enclos Corporate Office, 3600 American Blvd W, Bloomington, MN
  • Schedule: Monday–Friday, between 8 a.m.–5 p.m.
  • Duration: 10–12 weeks in Summer 2027
  • Compensation: Paid internship, with potential to transition into a permanent role after graduation.
  • Internship positions are not eligible for benefits, incentive bonus, or holiday pay.

At Enclos, you won't just learn about construction - you'll be a part of it. Join us this summer and start building the future.
