Internship Design System information

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Design System, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Design System Internship, you need foundational knowledge in UI/UX design principles, proficiency in design tools, and a relevant academic background such as graphic design or human-computer interaction. Familiarity with tools like Figma, Sketch, Adobe XD, and basic understanding of front-end frameworks or design tokens is typically required. Strong collaboration, attention to detail, and effective communication skills make an intern stand out in this role. These abilities are crucial for creating cohesive, scalable design assets and ensuring alignment across multidisciplinary product teams.

What is an Internship Design System?

An Internship Design System refers to an internship role focused on contributing to or maintaining a design system within a company or organization. Design systems are collections of reusable components, guidelines, and standards that help ensure consistency and efficiency in digital product design. As an intern in this field, you may assist with documenting components, creating design assets, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and ensuring that the system remains up-to-date and user-friendly. This role is ideal for students or recent graduates interested in user interface (UI), user experience (UX), and front-end development. It offers valuable experience in how large-scale design projects are managed and implemented.

What is the difference between Internship Design System vs UX Designer?

AspectInternship Design SystemUX Designer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in design, UI/UX, or related fieldsBachelor's or master's in design, human-computer interaction, or related fields
Work EnvironmentInternship programs within companies, focusing on supporting design teamsFull-time or freelance roles in various industries, leading user experience projects
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies to train and evaluate interns in design systems and UI componentsUsed by organizations to improve product usability and user satisfaction

The Internship Design System role focuses on supporting and learning about design systems during an internship, often as part of a training program. In contrast, a UX Designer is a full-time professional responsible for creating and optimizing user experiences. While both roles involve design skills, the internship is more educational and entry-level, whereas the UX Designer role involves independent project management and strategic design decisions.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as an intern in a design system team?

As an intern on a design system team, you can expect to work on a variety of tasks, such as creating and maintaining UI components, documenting design patterns, and collaborating with designers and developers to ensure consistency across products. You may also contribute to accessibility improvements, participate in user testing, and help gather feedback from stakeholders. This role typically involves close teamwork and offers a great opportunity to learn about scalable design and cross-functional collaboration in a real-world setting.

Job description

*** Please note***

This role is truly a Hybrid role with expected in-office presence.

We are prioritizing candidates who are local to Minneapolis.

About Aroris

"The healthcare system is broken" — we've all heard this a million times. Here's the critical piece that is broken (that you maybe didn't know): insurance companies have leverage and they use it, systematically squeezing providers to the point where staying afloat becomes the focus over patient care. That's the gap Aroris exists to close. We put the power back where it belongs, in the hands of the people actually delivering care.
We do that through Aroris360, our platform that combines deep payer expertise, AI-driven analytics, and live claims monitoring to find underpayments, negotiate better contracts, and hold payers accountable, continuously. We serve private healthcare practices across the country. We find the money, we help get it, and we ensure it continues to come in.
We're growing fast and building with intention. That means the culture here isn't accidental, it's a deliberate decision we make every day through four core values:

  • Joyful. We bring genuine energy and care to our work. Not forced enthusiasm, real investment in each other and in the mission.

  • Team Player. Collaboration over ego, always. The win belongs to everyone or it doesn't count.

  • Driven. We set high expectations for ourselves and pursue them with urgency. Good enough isn't in our vocabulary.

  • Relentless. We don't stop until the work is done and done well. Full stop.

Our core values aren't hanging up on the wall. They show up in how we hire, how we give feedback, how we recognize each other, and how we make decisions under pressure. We celebrate people who exemplify them. If you're looking for a company that means what it says about culture, this is the one.

Role Overview

We are looking for our next Product Designer to drive serious growth. In this role you'll be pioneering agentic AI experiences, making foundational platform decisions, and seeing your work in the hands of healthcare professionals across the country. Our Aroris360™ platform helps medical practices understand their data and leverage smart insights. This is the great role for someone excited about making a true difference in the US healthcare system, designing with AI, and being at the cutting edge of technologies.

This is an entry-level role with real ownership from day one. Our Aroris360™ platform is evolving and we're looking for someone to help us accelerate that work at a critical moment. Additionally, you will contribute to and evolve our Prima Design System. Reporting to our Principal Product Designer, you will collaborate daily with engineers, product managers and other internal SMEs and clients to deliver product features that have immediate impact. As an embedded platform designer, you will ship to clients monthly, working with product leads to shape how healthcare practices experience financial clarity and control. We're looking for a big thinking designer with detailed UI chops to accelerate our progress and continuous growth.

What you'll work on

70–80% · UI design for AI agentic workflows

  • You'll be a core voice for the user in our product discovery process, designing experiences across user types.

  • Design end-to-end workflows for clients and internal users

  • Participate in product discovery sprints in various capacities, from research to high-fidelity UI prototypes

  • Design with data-centricity and agentic AI interactions with the client at the center

  • Advocate for user experience across multiple persona perspectives

20–30% · Design system integration

  • You'll play a hands-on role in Phase 2 of our Prima Design System rollout, helping as we replace legacy code with Prima DS tokens and building the foundation for consistent, scalable UI across the platform.

  • Build and refine components in Figma, reinforcing design patterns and system-wide quality

  • Present new UI component concepts and integration ideas at weekly Prima × Engineering standups

  • Establish AI-assisted workflows using Figma Make and Claude Skills to streamline design system maintenance

  • QA components built by engineers for fidelity, accuracy, and spec adherence

  • Co-author Prima design system documentation with the Principal Designer, packaged for use across the org and in AI prototyping tools

What we're looking for
  • 1–3 years in UX/UI design roles (internships, bootcamps, and significant personal projects all count)

  • Strong Figma skills are essential; experience with additional tools is a plus

  • Case studies demonstrating component-level design work, a strong visual eye for UI, and ideally interactive prototyping or motion design

  • End-to-end UX thinking, you consider full workflows and the platform experience as a whole, not just isolated screens or components

  • Solid understanding of design systems, component-based UI, and design-to-dev transition; comfort working in a token-driven environment

  • A collaborative, delivery-focused mindset, you thrive working alongside engineers, not just handing off to them

  • Eagerness to help evolve how we deliver design and collaborate during discovery

Extras & nice to haves

  • AI Curiosity - Figma Make experience and training on other emerging UI prototyping tools

  • Experience designing for SaaS - Data-heavy applications, serving both internal and external user bases

  • Openness to AI-assisted design workflows - general curiosity about tools like Claude for design collaboration and design system maintenance

  • Healthcare + Healthcare AI experience a plus

Why you should join us
  • Every pixel you design directly impacts how users understand their data

  • We are entrepreneurial, driven, and team-oriented.

  • You will fit right in if you are as joyful, relentless, and genuinely as fired up about the work as we are!

  • We regularly schedule team outings (off-site) to celebrate quarterly wins.

  • We operate using the Entrepreneurial Operating System framework (and are flexible/adaptive to the dev/agile process).

  • Medical, dental, vision benefits

  • Paid parental leave

  • Hybrid schedule (we have a swanky office in the North Loop of downtown Minneapolis)

  • Unlimited PTO

Final note before you apply

At Aroris, we look for individuals who embody our core values because we believe these qualities are vital in achieving our collective goals and fostering a thriving work environment. We feel this is equally (if not more important than) if you check all the boxes. We'd love to hear from you even if you feel unsure about whether you meet every single requirement.
