Job Summary
The Martha Daniel Newell Visiting Scholar Program was established in 2011 with an endowment from Georgia College & State University alumna Mrs. Martha Daniel Newell. The program promotes the Georgia College & State University liberal arts mission by bringing to campus eminent scholars from the Arts, Humanities, Social Sciences and Physical Sciences, the disciplines at the heart of our liberal arts mission. The program provides exciting opportunities for the Georgia College & State University community to engage with nationally recognized senior scholars from distinguished institutions of higher learning with extensive records of excellence in research/ performance and teaching. Previous Newell Scholars have been hosted in Biological Sciences, Theatre, Psychology, Sociology, Music, History, and Art. Responsibilities
Teaching/Instructing - 40
The typical residency includes teaching an upper-level course or seminar in an area of disciplinary expertise. Interdisciplinary courses that attract students from multiple majors are welcome.
Scholarship and Creative Activity - 35
A Newell residency is an opportunity for intensive scholarly or creative explorations. Scholarship or creative work that benefits from Georgia College & State University and regional resources is especially encouraged. Interdisciplinary projects are welcome.
Public Service - 20
The typical Newell residency includes public lectures, presentations and programming. Depending on the areas of interest and expertise, programming and outreach extends beyond campus to the broader community.

Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
A terminal degree in the Academic discipline field. A record of excellence in scholarship, teaching, and public presentation. Must meet SACSCOC accreditation requirements stated in www.sacscoc.org (faculty credentials)
Other Required Qualifications
Scholars teach one class of their own design and conduct a small number of related campus and/or community events (such as lectures, performances, or projects) over the course of the spring semester. The class and related events should inform and engage students and the campus community and reflect and promote Georgia College & State University's liberal arts mission and values.
A residency proposal should identify the goals and initiatives the scholar will bring to the Georgia College & State University campus community during residency. Interdisciplinary explorations and a rich variety of programming are welcomed.
