Job description

Johnson Controls delivers building technologies that help create smarter, safer, and more efficient environments. In this role, you will support the design, configuration, and implementation of building control systems for HVAC, fire, security, and other low-voltage applications, working closely with project, engineering, sales, and field teams to deliver solutions that meet project and customer requirements.

What you will do

We are looking for a Controls Project Engineer to assist with engineering design, software support, documentation, and project execution for building automation projects. Under general supervision, you will help develop control system solutions using AutoCAD, BIM, and other engineering tools while supporting successful delivery from design through commissioning and turnover.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist in designing and configuring building automation and control systems in accordance with project specifications and contract documents.
  • Develop control drawings, flow diagrams, sequence of operations, bills of material, network layouts, and electrical schematics under the guidance of senior engineers.
  • Support the development, testing, and modification of software programs required for system operation.
  • Prepare drawings, equipment schedules, and documentation for project submittals and installation.
  • Help coordinate the ordering and tracking of materials for assigned projects.
  • Support field teams during controller loading, commissioning activities, and system validation efforts.
  • Troubleshoot basic hardware, software, and system integration issues with support from senior team members.
  • Document field changes and help maintain accurate as-built drawings and software records.
  • Communicate project status, progress updates, and technical information to internal teams and customers.
  • Participate in project turnover and release meetings with field teams.
  • Support customer training activities and provide technical assistance as needed.

  • Work safely and with accountability, keeping Johnson Controls safety standards at the center of every task.
  • Stay close to the project details, follow contract documents carefully, and remove obstacles quickly when issues arise.
  • Use clear communication and organized documentation to keep engineers, project teams, field technicians, and customers aligned.
  • Approach commissioning and troubleshooting with curiosity, candor, and a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Collaborate across functions and value different perspectives to help the team deliver reliable results.
  • Build technical knowledge of building automation systems, control theory, and industry best practices through hands-on project support.
  • Maintain accurate records so drawings, software, and field changes remain current throughout the project lifecycle.
What we look for
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Computer Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field; or
  • Associate degree in a related technical field with relevant industry experience; or
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Basic knowledge of AutoCAD, BIM, or other engineering design software.
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
  • Ability to support technical documentation, submittals, and project coordination activities.
Nice to Have
  • Up to 1 year of experience in building automation, controls, HVAC, electrical systems, or related engineering environments.
  • Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS), HVAC controls, or low-voltage systems.
  • Exposure to programming, networking, or system integration concepts.
  • Understanding of engineering drawings, electrical schematics, and technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of industry communication protocols such as BACnet, Modbus, or LonWorks.
  • Internship, co-op, or project experience related to controls, automation, HVAC, electrical, or mechanical systems.
