Internship Computer Science Intern information

What does a Computer Science Intern do?

A Computer Science Intern supports software development teams by assisting with coding, testing, debugging, and documentation tasks. Interns often work on real-world projects under the guidance of experienced engineers, gaining hands-on experience with programming languages, development tools, and collaborative workflows. The role helps students apply classroom knowledge in a professional setting, build their technical skills, and understand workplace dynamics in the tech industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Computer Science Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Computer Science Intern, you need foundational knowledge in programming, algorithms, and data structures, typically gained through coursework or related projects in a computer science degree program. Familiarity with coding languages like Python, Java, or C++, and experience with version control systems such as Git are often required. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and effective communication set outstanding interns apart. These abilities enable interns to contribute to real-world projects, adapt quickly, and collaborate successfully within technical teams.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on as a Computer Science Intern?

As a Computer Science Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that may include software development, debugging, testing, or assisting with database management. Interns often collaborate closely with full-time engineers and participate in code reviews, team meetings, and occasionally client interactions. The work environment is usually collaborative, providing opportunities to learn from experienced mentors and gain exposure to real-world development cycles. These experiences are designed to help you build technical skills and prepare for future roles in the industry.

Job description

Point C is seeking an AI Data Science Intern to join our Operations team this summer/fall. You'll work directly with operational leaders across claims, plan administration, client services, and clinical functions to identify manual workflows and build AI-assisted tools that drive real efficiency.ย This is not a shadow-and-observe internship. You'll have real ownership, real problems, and direct exposure to leadership. The internship is set for 10-12 weeks but may be extended based on business needs.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Partner with operational leaders to identify high-friction, high-volume manual workflows and opportunities to automate and improve processes using AI and data science across claims, plan administration, client services, and clinical/UM functions
  • Design and build AI-assisted tools and prototype solutions using Anthropic's Claude platform - from prompt-based assistants to lightweight internal apps; focus is on initial concepts and working prototypes, not full-scale production builds
  • Prototype quickly; target concept-to-working-demo timelines of days, not weeks; partner with engineers and technical team members to hand off and build out solutions beyond the prototype stage
  • Collaborate with the AI & Automation Engineering team on solutions requiring API integrations or multi-system workflows
  • Document use cases, build logic, and outcomes so solutions are repeatable beyond the internship; write clear documentation capturing the idea, logic, and intended approach for each solution to enable handoff and continuity
  • Present findings and ROI framing to operational and executive leadership
  • Help build and deliver an AI Efficiency Playbook at the close of the internship - capturing what was built, what it replaced, recommended next steps, and a framework for how Point C can continue identifying and implementing AI-driven improvements

Qualifications:

  • Currently a Senior or Graduate student enrolled in a degree program in Business, Computer Science, Health Informatics, Operations, or a related field
  • Hands-on experience with AI tools such as Claude, ChatGPT, or similar LLMs
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; able to translate technical ideas for non-technical audiences
  • Ability to work independently, manage ambiguity, and prioritize across multiple projects
  • Experience with prompt engineering, APIs, or workflow automation tools (Make, Zapier, Power Automate) is a strong plus
  • Familiarity with Python, JavaScript, or C#/.NET is a plus
  • Prior exposure to healthcare, TPAs, or regulated operational environments is a plus
