Controller
Our community focused client is seeking a technically strong Controller to lead accounting operations, strengthen financial processes, and provide expert technical guidance in a complex, mission-driven environment. This individual will combine deep accounting knowledge with collaborative leadership, helping to build scalable systems, ensure regulatory compliance, and support organizational growth through sound financial stewardship. The ideal candidate is intellectually curious, solutions-oriented, equity-minded, and comfortable navigating evolving priorities while developing high-performing teams.

This role is a hybrid model in Portland, Oregon, with 1-2 days per month in office. Candidates must live within the greater Portland-Metro area.

Controller Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor accounting staff, providing oversight, coaching, and development for a multi-level team.
  • Oversee general ledger operations, chart of accounts management, financial reporting, and accounting system integrity.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, grant and funding requirements, audit standards, and applicable financial regulations.
  • Manage technical accounting functions including revenue recognition, restricted funds, cost allocations, and internal controls.
  • Partner with finance leadership to enhance policies, streamline processes, improve systems, and support budgeting, treasury, and audit activities.

Controller Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience, including 5+ years of staff supervision and leadership responsibility.
  • Demonstrated nonprofit accounting experience with strong expertise in revenue recognition, restricted funding, compliance, and financial controls.
  • CPA license strongly preferred, with public accounting experience highly valued.
  • Experience with financial systems and tools such as Sage Intacct, Bill.com, ADP, Asana, and Microsoft Excel.

Salary: $105K-$118K/year. (DOE)
