About the Team and Position

We're looking for a high-energy, data-driven Staff Accountant to join our rapidly growing Corporate Tax team at our HQ in Tempe. Under the direction of the Income Tax Manager, you will handle foundational aspects of Carvana's income taxes, helping to provide accurate, timely preparation and reporting of key financial schedules. This is a position with full visibility into our unique business model, where you will see your numbers and insights have an immediate, tangible impact.
What You'll Be Doing
  • Tax Compliance: Assist in the accurate preparation of federal and state income tax returns, including detail support and calculations for complex Partnership and Corporate compliance and multi-state apportionment.
  • Extensions & Estimates: Prepare multi-state income tax extensions and estimated tax payment calculations to keep us moving at full speed.
  • Provision Support: Assist with the quarterly and year-end preparation of income tax provisions under ASC 740 and all related GAAP work papers.
  • Accounting Support: Keep our books pristine by preparing month-end journal entries and account reconciliations related to corporate tax accounts.
  • Data & Modeling: Collaborate on taxable income projections, financial forecasting, and the Unclaimed Property reporting/compliance process.
  • Fixed Assets: Maintain and update tax fixed asset schedules, keeping track of depreciation calculations within our ERP systems.
  • Research: Conduct preliminary tax research on emerging federal and state tax issues using industry-standard tools and assist with drafting internal documentation.
  • Collaboration: Partner cross-functionally with internal accounting and finance teams to gather financial data and support responses to tax audits or notices.
  • Ad-Hoc: Take on special projects and ad-hoc reporting as needed to support a rapidly evolving tax department.
What You Should Know/Have
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting from an accredited institution.
  • Experience: 0–2 years of corporate tax accounting experience within private industry and/or public accounting (relevant internship experience is highly valued!).
  • Technical Foundation: A strong, foundational understanding of basic Tax regulations and GAAP accounting principles.
  • Software Mastery: Proficiency in MS Office applications, with advanced foundational skills in Excel (VLOOKUPs, pivot tables, and data manipulation).
  • Communication: Exceptional written and oral communication skills; ability to explain numbers clearly.
  • Attributes: Highly detail-oriented with a strong knack for gathering, organizing, and solving problems using data.
It Would Be Great If You Also Had (Preferred)
  • Master's degree in Accounting or Taxation.
  • CPA candidate actively tracking toward licensure.
  • Exposure to corporate tax research tools (e.g., RIA Checkpoint, BNA, and/or CCH).
  • Familiarity with data automation tools
  • Experience or exposure to Oracle Fusion and/or Oracle tax fixed assets.
