Job description

Description:

We are seeking a highly skilled Construction Engineer I to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for supporting the planning, coordination, and execution of construction projects. This role will involve working closely with senior engineers, contractors, and project managers to ensure that projects meet all technical specifications, safety requirements, and timelines. The Construction Engineer I will contribute to various aspects of the construction process, from site analysis to project completion, and will have the opportunity to grow and develop within the field of construction engineering. Strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a solid understanding of construction methods are essential for success in this position. This position will require travel to project sites around the District 3 Illinois region, including but not limited to Bureau, Dekalb, Ford, Grundy, Iroquois, Kankakee, Kendall, LaSalle, and Livingston Counties.


Key Responsibilities

  • Assist in the planning, design, and execution of construction projects, ensuring adherence to engineering principles and project specifications.
  • Collaborate with senior engineers and project managers to develop project schedules, cost estimates, and resource allocations.
  • Conduct site assessments and ensure construction activities comply with safety regulations, quality standards, and environmental guidelines.
  • Monitor and report on project progress, identifying potential issues and assisting in problem-solving efforts.
  • Coordinate with contractors, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure timely delivery of materials and services.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation, including drawings, reports, and permits, to ensure compliance with relevant codes and regulations.
  • Assist in the management of project budgets and resources, ensuring efficient use of materials and labor.
  • Provide support in conducting inspections, testing, and evaluations to ensure quality control and compliance.
  • Participate in team meetings to discuss project status, risks, and next steps.
  • Continuously update knowledge of industry trends, technologies, and best practices to contribute to project improvements.
Requirements:

Education:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering, or a related field.
  • Engineer-in-Training (EIT) certification preferred

Experience:

  • 0–2 years of experience in construction engineering, field engineering, or related entry-level roles (internship or co-op experience may be considered).
  • Exposure to construction projects such as roadways, bridges, utilities, or site development is preferred.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of construction methods, materials, and safety standards.
  • Familiarity with engineering drawings, specifications, and project documentation.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to follow direction and work collaboratively with senior engineers, contractors, and project teams.
  • Good organizational and time-management skills.
  • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic engineering or construction software.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel to project sites as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Internship or co-op experience in construction engineering or a related field.
  • Familiarity with state or municipal transportation agencies.
  • Knowledge of construction inspection, quantity tracking, or materials testing.
  • OSHA 10 certification or willingness to obtain.
