Internship Building Performance information

What is an internship in building performance?

An Internship in Building Performance is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain practical experience in evaluating and improving the energy efficiency, sustainability, and overall performance of buildings. Interns typically work alongside engineers, architects, or building scientists to analyze building systems, conduct energy audits, and assist with implementing green building strategies. This role provides hands-on exposure to energy modeling, data analysis, and the use of building performance software, preparing interns for careers in sustainable design and construction.

What types of projects and responsibilities can I expect during an internship in building performance?

As an intern in Building Performance, you can expect to work on a variety of projects focused on energy efficiency, sustainability assessments, and building system analyses. Typical responsibilities may include data collection, performing energy modeling, assisting with site audits, and preparing technical reports under the guidance of senior engineers or consultants. You'll often collaborate closely with multidisciplinary teams, gaining exposure to both design and operations aspects of building performance. This hands-on experience is valuable for understanding industry standards, building codes, and sustainable building practices, providing an excellent foundation for a future career in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship in building performance, and why are they important?

To thrive in a Building Performance Internship, you need foundational knowledge in building science, energy efficiency, and sustainability, typically supported by coursework in engineering or architecture. Familiarity with energy modeling software (such as EnergyPlus or eQuest), building codes, and green building certifications like LEED is often required. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help interns interpret data and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualities ensure accurate assessments, innovative solutions, and successful project outcomes in the field of high-performance buildings.
