WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
We are looking for motivated and technically curious students to join our Cox Energy and Sustainability (CES) Team as Building Automation Specialist Interns. Under the direction of experienced Building Automation Technicians and Engineers, interns will gain hands-on exposure to the installation, commissioning, integration, and optimization of Building Automation Systems (BAS) within commercial and industrial facilities. Throughout the internship, students will develop a practical understanding of HVAC controls, energy-efficient building operations, field commissioning practices, and troubleshooting techniques. Interns will work alongside project teams in both office and field environments while gaining experience with industry-standard controls, communication protocols, and automation technologies. By the end of the internship, students will have strengthened their technical knowledge, professional communication skills, and understanding of how intelligent building systems support occupant comfort, operational efficiency, and sustainability goals. This is an in person opportunity in our Randolph Office.
THE JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Assist with the installation, startup, and commissioning of building automation and HVAC control systems
• Support point-to-point checkout, device verification, and functional testing activities
• Learn to read and interpret control drawings, wiring diagrams, engineering specifications, and sequences of operation
• Assist in troubleshooting sensors, actuators, control panels, and communication networks including BACnet and Modbus
• Support technicians and engineers with field documentation, system reporting, and project records
• Participate in system integration and verification activities on new construction and retrofit projects
• Observe and assist with customer training and system turnover processes
• Work closely with project managers, field technicians, engineers, and customers to support successful project execution
• Follow all company safety standards, site requirements, and OSHA guidelines
• Gain exposure to building performance, energy efficiency, and sustainable building operations
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
• Currently pursuing a degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, HVAC Engineering Technology, Building Automation, or a related technical field
• Interest in HVAC systems, controls, building automation, and energy management
• Ability to read technical drawings and schematics or willingness to learn
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and troubleshooting skills
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality work
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications
• Valid driver's license and ability to travel to project sites preferred
• Willingness to work in field environments including mechanical rooms, rooftops, and construction sites under supervision
