The Campus Planning Intern provides support to the department responsible for the design and construction of capital projects throughout the Emerson College campus. Reporting to the Director of Real Estate & Space Planning, the Intern will support the department's efforts in conducting space programming, space layout and design, light renovations, departmental moves, and space and facility analysis.
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES
  • Assist the Director of Real Estate & Space Planning to update the college's space management and building model database to assure accurate physical space measurement and use data.
  • Provide assistance with the analysis of the current space utilization and integrate into master plan, strategic plan and facilities planning issues.
  • Make recommendations on improvements to layouts and space assignments.
  • Perform space feasibility and fit studies.
  • Attend user meetings, prepare meeting notes documenting space planning issues, draft scopes of work for planning studies (internal or consultant), prepare planning analyses, recommend and prepare solutions for space needs, prepare plans.
  • Assist in the development of project feasibility reports by evaluating user needs, providing potential space reconfiguration designs and other deliverables.
  • Identify options for space efficiency to meet central and academic program priorities.
  • Identify and present strategies for sequencing space moves.
  • Prepare presentation materials for senior leadership on current space issues and effectively communicate information graphically and verbally to inform decision-making.
  • Assist in the development of departmental master plans. Gather and evaluate space utilization data, and prepare and present dashboards, plans and analyses.
  • Document faculty and staff location data for both Workday and the 911 system. Update the system as needed when employees onboard and depart, and when moves happen within the department or departmental moves.
  • Under the guidance of the Director of Real Estate & Space Planning, , the Campus Planning Intern will work with College departments to develop understanding of space needs, program requirements for renovation and relocation projects.
  • Assist in designing schematic and feasibility plans to optimize space efficiency for smaller renovation projects while following building codes and AIA guidelines.

QUALIFICATIONS - Qualifications are deemed required or preferred and represent what is needed to effectively perform job.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent experience required.
  • Previous internship or work experience in facilities, design, architecture or construction required.
  • Working towards a Bachelor's degree in architecture, engineering, facilities management, urban studies, building construction technology or closely related field strongly preferred.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES - May be representative, but not all-inclusive, of those knowledge, skills, and abilities commonly associated with the job.
  • Thorough knowledge of the principles, practices and methods of Space Management
  • Advanced Revit skill level
  • Basic knowledge of building codes; ability to inspect and determine the adaptability and cost of renovation of existing structures.
  • Familiarity with space planning and facility databases
  • Demonstrated project management skills
  • Intermediate AutoCad experience
  • Knowledge of, and experience using; MS Office software, Adobe Suite, AutoCAD preferred
  • Familiarity with database development and space management software (e.g., Archibus and REVIT) supports the evaluation and allocation of space on campus while planning for long term space needs preferred
  • Strong verbal, written and interpersonal skills to communicate effectively with individuals at all levels of the organization as well as outside consultants and contractors.
  • Analytical skills necessary to evaluate data, proposals and plans, develop project ideas and conduct feasibility studies effectively. Strong problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to take initiative, work independently, and follow solutions through to completion.
  • Ability to work on multiple projects at one time. Ability to pay close attention to detail and quality while simultaneously responding to urgent requests.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills including the ability to meet deadlines and work under pressure.
  • Presentation preparation and delivery skills, ability to present in group settings.
  • Assist with furniture layouts, specifications, coordination
  • Support interior finishes selection, coordination, and documentation
  • Help track project schedules and deliverables

IN-OFFICE EXPECTATIONS
This position requires an in-person presence on the Boston Campus during the work week. This assignment ends in March 2027.
The compensation for this position is $25 per hour, with a minimum of 20 hours per week, with increasing hours during the summer.
