Position Description
DEFINITION:
To provide instruction to nursing students in classroom, lab and clinical environments. Online instruction may be required.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED AND EXERCISED:
  • Receives general supervision from Associate Director, Associate Degree Nursing.
  • May exercise functional and technical supervision over instructional assistants.

Duties & Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS STATEMENTS:
Essential and other important responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Essential Functions:
  • Provide classroom, clinical, and laboratory instruction to students.
  • Prepare lesson plans and schedule classroom activities; develop and prepare supplemental materials to enhance textbook lessons.
  • Develop and prepare tests to evaluate student performance; grade and record individual scores.
  • Act as an advisor and counselor to students; provide individual assistance to students outside of the classroom as needed.
  • Provide classroom demonstrations on various equipment; develop laboratory assignments to provide hands on experience as appropriate.
  • Participate in curriculum development, evaluation and change; attend faculty meetings as required.
  • Maintain accurate records of student attendance and performance; maintain other records and data bases according to program needs or accreditation requirements.
  • Stay abreast of new developments and changes in various academic fields; participate in staff development programs, workshops, seminars and other continuing education programs as appropriate.
  • Oversee the implementation of policies and procedures related to required teaching area.
  • Participate on college committees and in other institutional activities and programs.
    Other Important Functions:
    • Fill in for other instructors as needed.
    • Assess the relevancy and impact of various lessons; revise and improve lesson format; evaluate various textbooks and other learning resources to be used for future classes.
    • Assist in the recruitment of students.
    • Oversee and participate in clinical assignments; travel to clinical agencies to provide assistance and instruction as appropriate.
    • Participate in a variety of student related administrative activities including reviewing admission requirements, progress and qualifications for graduation. Demonstrate competence regarding the handling of hazardous substances such as blood borne pathogens; continually undergo training and train students in such procedures.
    • Demonstrate community involvement (required of all nursing faculty).
    • Participate in all functions related to implementation of the programs systematic plan for evaluation.
    • Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications
QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Minimum Education/Training:
  • A Master's Degree in Nursing.
  • Must have a current, unrestricted North Carolina RN license.
  • Have education in teaching and learning principles for adult education, including curriculum development, implementation, and evaluation, appropriate to assignment. Once completed, this education need not be repeated if employing organization is changed. This education may be demonstrated by one of the following:
    1. (A) completion of 45 contact hours of Board-approved continuing education courses;
    2. (B) completion of a certificate program in nursing education;
    3. (C) nine semester hours of graduate course work in adult learning and learning principles;
    4. (D) national certification in nursing education; or
    5. (E) documentation of completion of structured, individualized development activities of at least 45 contact hours approved by the Board. Criteria for approval shall include content in the faculty role in curriculum implementation, curricular objectives to be met and evaluated, review of strategies for identified student population, and expectations of student and faculty performance.
  • Have knowledge of current nursing practice for the registered nurse and the licensed practical nurse.

Minimum Experience:
For nursing faculty, a minimum of two calendar years of prior full-time employment or the equivalent in clinical nursing practice as an RN.
Preferred Education/Training, Experience, Skills:
Experience teaching in a nursing program that prepares graduates at entry level to take the NCLEX-RN is preferred.
