What is an Internship in Antenna Design?

An Internship in Antenna Design is a temporary position, usually for students or recent graduates, where you gain hands-on experience working with professionals in the field of antenna engineering. Interns typically assist with designing, modeling, testing, and optimizing antennas used in wireless communication systems, such as those found in smartphones, satellites, and radar. The internship often involves using specialized software, conducting experiments in labs, and learning about electromagnetic theory and practical design considerations. This experience helps interns develop technical skills and industry knowledge, preparing them for a career in antenna or RF engineering.

What types of projects and hands-on experiences can I expect during an Internship in Antenna Design?

As an intern in antenna design, you can expect to work on a variety of hands-on projects such as designing, simulating, and testing antennas for applications like wireless communication or radar systems. You may use industry-standard simulation tools (e.g., HFSS, CST) to model antenna performance and participate in laboratory measurements alongside experienced engineers. Interns often contribute to team meetings, collaborate with other engineering disciplines, and may help troubleshoot and optimize antenna prototypes. This environment provides practical experience and exposure to both the theoretical and applied aspects of antenna design.

What is the difference between Internship Antenna Design vs Antenna Design Engineer?

AspectInternship Antenna DesignAntenna Design Engineer
CredentialsEnrolled in or recent graduate in Electrical Engineering or related fieldBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering, RF Engineering, or related
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, research labs, or entry-level positionsFull-time professional roles in R&D, manufacturing, or telecommunications companies
ResponsibilitiesAssisting in antenna design, testing, and documentation under supervisionLeading antenna design projects, optimizing performance, and collaborating with teams

In summary, Internship Antenna Design is a temporary, learning-focused position for students or recent graduates, while Antenna Design Engineer is a full-time professional role requiring experience and expertise in designing and developing antennas for industry applications.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Antenna Design, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Antenna Design Intern, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, electromagnetics, and RF/microwave principles, often supported by ongoing studies in these fields. Familiarity with simulation tools like CST, HFSS, and MATLAB, as well as basic measurement equipment, is typically expected. Analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication are critical soft skills for collaborating with teams and solving design challenges. These skills are crucial for developing innovative, functional antenna solutions that meet technical and project requirements.

Job description

At Vast, our mission is to contribute to a future where billions of people are living and thriving in space. Vast is developing next-generation space stations to ensure a continuous human presence in space for America and its allies, enabling advanced microgravity research and manufacturing, and unlocking a new space economy for government, corporate, and private customers. Using an incremental, hardware-rich and low-cost approach, Vast is rapidly developing its multi-module Haven Station. Haven Demo's 2025 success made Vast the only operational commercial space station company to fly and operate its own spacecraft. Next, Haven-1 is expected to become the world's first commercial space station when it launches, followed by additional Haven modules to enable permanent human presence by 2030. Our team is all-in, committed to executing our mission safely and on time. If you want to work with the most talented people on Earth furthering space exploration for humanity, come join us.
Vast is looking for an RF Antenna Engineer, reporting to the Director, RF Engineering, to support the development of the systems that will be required for the design and build of artificial-gravity human-rated space stations.
This will be a full-time, exempt position located in our Long Beach location.
Responsibilities:
  • Develop RF Antenna telemetry and tracking systems for the next generation of crewed space stations, including hardware, software and operations for space station tracking, mission data, payload data, and communications with visiting vehicles.
  • Design and test RF antenna hardware in VHF through Ka-band - from concept to production.
  • Perform architecture trade studies, requirements definition, component design, and manage development for various radios and/or laser systems (S-band, X-band, K-Band, infrared/optical, TDRS, C2V2, etc.)
  • Design, model and EM simulation of complex RF hardware (antenna, filters, passives)
  • Fabricate and characterize prototypes of antennas, passives, and RF front ends.
  • Design of advanced antenna and feed systems for on-orbit spacecraft and ground systems.
  • Full life-cycle ownership for related systems, including development, testing, integration, operations and maintenance for related hardware (interfaces, modems, radios, antennas, etc.)
  • Provide technical direction relating to RF systems and set top-level requirements to hardware agile development teams, integration, and test personnel.
  • Partner with manufacturing/integration engineers to develop work instructions and installation procedures for integrating and testing RF hardware.
