Internship Animation Internships information

What are animation internships?

Animation internships are temporary positions at animation studios, production companies, or related organizations where students or recent graduates can gain hands-on experience in the animation industry. Interns typically assist with tasks such as storyboarding, character design, 2D/3D animation, editing, and other production processes. These programs provide valuable exposure to industry workflows, software, and professional networks, helping interns build their portfolios and increase their employability in the field. Most animation internships are offered during the summer or academic breaks and may be paid or unpaid, depending on the company.

Animation Assistants are entry-level professional roles within studios, supporting animation teams on ongoing projects. While both involve animation work, internships focus on learning, whereas assistant roles involve contributing to real projects in a professional setting.

What kinds of projects do animation interns typically work on, and how much creative input do they have?

Animation interns often assist with a variety of projects, including storyboarding, character design, and motion graphics, depending on the studio's needs. While much of the work may involve supporting senior animators and collaborating on ongoing projects, interns are often encouraged to contribute their ideas during team meetings and brainstorming sessions. This hands-on experience provides valuable exposure to the animation production pipeline, and outstanding interns may even have the opportunity to see their contributions included in final products. The level of creative input can vary, but proactive communication and enthusiasm are usually welcomed and noticed by the team.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Animation Intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Animation Intern, you need foundational skills in animation principles, drawing, storyboarding, and familiarity with animation software, typically supported by coursework or a relevant degree in animation or related fields. Proficiency in tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Toon Boom, or Maya is often required, and a strong portfolio showcasing your work is essential. Creativity, attention to detail, teamwork, and a willingness to learn help candidates stand out in collaborative studio environments. These skills ensure you can contribute effectively to animation projects, adapt to feedback, and grow within a fast-paced creative industry.
