The Department of Human Nutrition, Food and Animal Sciences (HNFAS) in the College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resilience (CTAHR) at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa (UHM) invites applications for a 9-month, non-tenure track instructor position in Animal Science.
CTAHR's Animal Science program serves hundreds of undergraduate majors and is rapidly growing in the college. The program has broad education and training opportunities across terrestrial livestock and aquaculture, reflecting Hawaii's distinctive ranching and aquatic food systems. We seek a dedicated educator to lead large, introductory courses and expand hands-on learning with Hawaii's livestock and aquaculture industries to support student learning and training.
Duties and Responsibilities
Instruction (80%)
- Teach undergraduate courses and labs in animal and aquaculture science (such as ANSC 200, 200L, 201, 321, 492) especially large, introductory lecture/lab sections, in alignment with departmental needs and priorities. Coordinate multi-section courses, assess a variety of undergraduate courses, labs and livestock animal farm practices in animal science undergraduate programs based on programmatic needs.
- Develop, implement, and assess skills-based labs/practicums (e.g., livestock handling & welfare; water-quality testing; life-support systems; hatchery/nursery/grow-out practices).
- Use evidence-based pedagogy and high-impact practices (field experiences, service learning, industry projects).
- Advise and mentor undergraduates; contribute to student clubs/organizations (e.g., Pre-Vet Club, livestock judging), and serving on departmental, college, and/or university committees
- Coordinate student training and supervised activities at CTAHR research stations and partner ranches/hatcheries/aquaculture facilities (in collaboration with station managers and faculty).
- Build and sustain partnerships with Hawaii ranching, dairy, small ruminant, swine/poultry, and aquaculture sectors to support internships, site visits, and workforce development.
- Contribute to program assessment and continuous improvement; serve on departmental/college/university committees.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
- M.S. degree in Animal Science or a closely related field (livestock and/or aquaculture emphasis) from an accredited university/institution by time of appointment.
- Demonstrated ability to teach college-level face-to-face lecture and laboratory courses.
- Working knowledge of U.S. livestock production and/or aquaculture production practices, including animal handling/welfare, aquatic biosecurity, and lab/field safety.
- Excellent communication and organizational skills; ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and external stakeholders.
- Ph.D. or D.V.M. (farm-animal emphasis) or doctoral degree in aquaculture/fisheries or related field.
- Success teaching large-enrollment sections and supervising GTAs/labs.
- Demonstrated hands-on training innovations (e.g., livestock skill modules; aquaculture life-support/water-quality labs; practicum design).
- Experience coordinating internships and industry partnerships; experience advising student clubs.
