Internship Analog Layout Design Engineer information

What types of projects can an Internship Analog Layout Design Engineer expect to work on, and how is mentorship typically provided in this role?

As an Internship Analog Layout Design Engineer, you will often work on projects involving the physical layout of analog and mixed-signal circuits, such as amplifiers, ADCs, or power management blocks. You can expect to collaborate closely with senior layout engineers and circuit designers, receiving guidance on best practices, design reviews, and tool usage. Mentorship is typically provided through regular check-ins, code reviews, and informal Q&A sessions, allowing you to learn industry-standard CAD tools and layout methodologies while contributing to real silicon tape-outs.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Analog Layout Design Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Internship Analog Layout Design Engineer, you need a solid understanding of analog circuit fundamentals, semiconductor device physics, and coursework or experience in microelectronics. Familiarity with EDA tools such as Cadence Virtuoso, and exposure to industry standards like DRC/LVS checks, is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for this role. These skills and qualifications are essential for creating reliable, efficient circuit layouts that meet technical specifications and support team collaboration in the design process.

What is the difference between Internship Analog Layout Design Engineer vs Analog Layout Design Engineer?

AspectInternship Analog Layout Design EngineerAnalog Layout Design Engineer
QualificationsEnrolled in or recent graduate of Electrical Engineering or related fieldBachelor's or Master's in Electrical Engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentInternship programs, entry-level projects, supervised tasksFull-time professional role, independent project work
ResponsibilitiesAssisting in layout design, learning tools, supporting senior engineersDesigning, optimizing, and verifying analog layouts independently

In summary, an Internship Analog Layout Design Engineer is a temporary, learning-focused role for students or recent graduates, while an Analog Layout Design Engineer is a full-time professional responsible for independent design tasks in the industry.

What does an Internship Analog Layout Design Engineer do?

An Internship Analog Layout Design Engineer assists in the design and layout of analog integrated circuits under the guidance of experienced engineers. Their responsibilities include translating circuit schematics into physical layouts using specialized software, ensuring that the design meets performance and manufacturing requirements. Interns may also run design rule checks (DRC) and layout versus schematic (LVS) verifications to ensure correctness. This role helps interns build skills in analog design, CAD tools, and an understanding of semiconductor manufacturing processes.

Job description

COME JOIN MID-CONTINENT!

“Where your work is valued—above-market pay, real work-life balance, and a team that feels like home.”

THE POSITION…

As an Electrical Design Engineer, you will design avionics, power electronics and battery systems interfacing within high-performance and safety-critical systems. Experience the entire product lifecycle, from concept and requirements, through design, implementation, testing and certification, and field application. You can expect a variety of opportunities ranging from products for cockpit displays and instruments, local and remote sensing, data conversion and storage, lithium battery management, along with providing analog/digital support to the power design team for AC/DC, DC/DC, and DC/AC power conversion.

At Mid-Continent Instruments and Avionics, we are committed to quality, service, integrity, and professionalism. Our employees serve the best customers from all over the world in general, business and commercial, advanced air mobility, defense and special missions markets. In this role, you’ll be an important part of the reason our customers consider us a premier instrument, avionics, and aircraft power solutions provider.

THIS POSITION MAY BE FOR YOU IF…

  • You have a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering.
  • You have a minimum of 5 years in analog and mixed-signal design, particularly suited to precision instrumentation, signal conditioning, and integrated circuit applications.
  • You have proficiency with design and simulation tools (PADS, LTSpice, or similar schematic capture).
  • You have a strong grasp of mixed-signal simulation techniques and PCB layout software.
  • You have a solid understanding of signal integrity, impedance matching, and EMI/EMC design practices such as RTCA DO-160 or MIL-STD-810/461.
  • You are proficient with Microsoft Office.
  • You have strong attention to detail.
  • You are organized, focused and results oriented.
  • You are a problem-solver with critical thinking and prioritizing skills.
  • You have excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills.
WE WOULD REALLY LIKE IT IF… (but it’s not a deal breaker)
  • You have experience with Design for Manufacture and Design for Test (DFM & DFT)
  • You have design experience in the aviation industry
  • WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM ONE DAY TO THE NEXT…

    • Design and implement analog front-end circuits, including amplifiers, ADC/DAC interfaces, and filtering stages to enable accurate signal processing for a range of instrumentation
    • Lead mixed-signal system integration to design and verify reliable data conversion, filtering, and conditioning stages.
    • Research new components, technologies, and methods to incorporate into new and existing designs
    • Coordinate with other functional teams, including layout, mechanical, software, and certification engineers
    • Build and troubleshoot hardware, including soldering, operation of test equipment, and daily work in both office and test lab environments
    • Participate in rigorous testing and troubleshooting using tools like oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, and logic analyzers to validate performance against stringent requirements
    • Design and integrate manufacturing tools for new products, as needed
    • Create detailed documentation for design verification, testing protocols, and component selection rationales in required formats, including BOMs, ECOs, and work instructions

WE ARE ONE OF THE BEST PLACES TO WORK…

  • We provide above-market pay and a comprehensive benefits package.
  • We promote an environment where you can excel in your career while still maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
  • Our facility is climate controlled, clean, organized, and safe. We operate in a professional, light manufacturing environment.
  • We believe anything worth doing is worth doing right – every time.
  • We have frequent events to keep work interesting. Our food drive is super impressive, we enjoy an annual food truck fest appreciation day, monthly fruit/donut day, employee luncheons throughout the year, wellness challenges with incentives, and frequent ticket raffles for local sporting and cultural events.
