Job description

Functional Safety Platform Systems Engineer (BH-398674)

Location Dearborn, United States Sector Engineering Salary $70.00 to $90.00 per hour

We are seeking a Functional Safety Platform Systems Engineer to support our advanced Electric Vehicle (EV) program by translating system design, concept, and architecture into formal, traceable requirements within JAMA Connect. This is a junior-to-mid level role ideal for an engineer with a foundational understanding of systems engineering and test processes who is eager to grow their expertise in requirements management, verification, and validation within a fast-paced automotive EV environment. The role includes writing test cases, driving requirements and test cases through formal review/approval, reviewing V&V test results, and occasionally performing hands‑on testing on EV subsystems (e.g., battery, powertrain, charging, thermal, or vehicle controls).

You will also collaborate with our Functional Safety team, which owns the entire safety lifecycle from core development through application in a serial‑production vehicle. In this role, you will work on EGAS Level 3 functional safety concepts, applying the three‑level monitoring architecture (Level 1: Function, Level 2: Function Monitoring, Level 3: Processor Monitoring). This role offers exposure to how existing safety standards are applied in practice, with opportunities to contribute ideas as evolving safety approaches are developed. Safety‑related requirements and test cases will also be captured and tracked through JAMA, ensuring full traceability into the vehicle's functional safety case.

Requirements Engineering
  • Review and author system design documents, concept proposals, and architecture diagrams (e.g., watchdog timers, independent MPU/CPU monitoring paths, e‑motor/inverter torque control, battery management systems, charging systems, or thermal management) to identify and derive functional and non‑functional requirements.
  • Author and structure requirements in JAMA Connect, ensuring proper linkage to design/architecture and maintaining traceability.
  • Support requirements review sessions with design, architecture, and systems engineering stakeholders; incorporate feedback and drive items toward approval/baseline.
  • Learn and apply automotive requirement‑writing best practices (clarity, testability, verifiability) under guidance from senior engineers.
Test Case Development & Management
  • Develop test cases and procedures derived from approved requirements, tailored to EV subsystem behavior (e.g., battery performance, charging cycles, thermal limits, functional safety behaviors).
  • Enter and maintain test cases in JAMA, linking them to corresponding requirements for full traceability.
  • Participate in test case peer reviews and revise based on feedback.
  • Support the formal approval workflow for test cases prior to execution.
Verification & Validation Support
  • Review test results submitted by the V&V team for completeness, correctness, and alignment with approved test cases and pass/fail criteria.
  • Flag discrepancies or anomalies in test data and collaborate with V&V engineers to investigate and resolve.
  • Occasionally perform hands‑on testing (bench‑level, HIL, or vehicle‑level as applicable) to validate results or support V&V activities, especially on EV‑specific subsystems.
  • Assist in documenting and tracking defects/issues found during test review back to originating requirements.
Process & Documentation
  • Follow established requirements and test management processes, ensuring compliance with internal quality standards and relevant automotive standards (e.g., ISO 26262 functional safety, ASPICE).
  • Maintain organized, audit‑ready records of requirements, test cases, reviews, and approvals in JAMA.
  • Support program reviews (e.g., design reviews, test readiness reviews) by providing accurate requirements and test status updates.
  • Work closely with senior systems and V&V engineers to continuously build proficiency in EV systems engineering practices.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical, Mechanical, Systems, or Automotive Engineering (or related field).
  • 1-4 years of experience in systems engineering, requirements engineering, or test/V&V roles (automotive or related industry preferred).
  • Exposure to our working knowledge of JAMA Connect or similar requirements/ALM tools (DOORS, Polarion, etc.).
  • Basic understanding of requirement traceability and review/approval workflows.
  • Ability to read and interpret system architecture diagrams and design specifications.
  • Strong attention to detail, documentation skills, and written/verbal communication.
  • Willingness to learn EV‑specific systems (battery, powertrain, charging, thermal management, or ADAS/vehicle controls).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Internship, co‑op, or prior work experience in automotive or EV product development.
  • Familiarity with automotive standards such as ISO 26262 (functional safety) or ASPICE.
  • Basic hands‑on testing experience (bench setups, HIL, data acquisition tools).
  • Exposure to defect tracking tools (JIRA, ALM) and how they integrate with requirements/test management.
