Internship Ai Automation information

What is an internship in AI automation?

An Internship in AI Automation is a temporary position for students or recent graduates to gain practical experience in applying artificial intelligence and automation technologies to real-world problems. Interns typically work on projects involving machine learning, natural language processing, robotics, or process automation under the supervision of experienced professionals. These internships help participants develop technical skills, gain industry exposure, and build a foundation for a future career in AI or automation fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship in AI automation, and why are they important?

To thrive in an AI Automation internship, you typically need a strong foundation in programming (such as Python), basic understanding of machine learning concepts, and a background in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with tools like TensorFlow, scikit-learn, cloud platforms (e.g., AWS or Azure), and version control systems (like Git) is highly beneficial. Strong problem-solving skills, eagerness to learn, and effective teamwork and communication set standout interns apart. These abilities enable interns to contribute meaningfully to automation projects, adapt to evolving technologies, and collaborate within multidisciplinary teams.

What kinds of projects and responsibilities can I expect during an AI automation internship?

As an AI Automation intern, you can expect to work on projects involving data collection, preprocessing, and implementing automation scripts using AI tools and frameworks. You'll likely collaborate with data scientists, engineers, and business analysts to streamline workflows, test machine learning models, and integrate automation solutions into real business processes. Interns often have the chance to contribute to real-world applications, participate in code reviews, and present their findings to the team, making this role both hands-on and collaborative. This experience is valuable for building technical skills and gaining insight into how AI-driven automation transforms business operations.

As AI continues to transform higher education, we are investing in innovative technologies, automation opportunities, and data-informed solutions that improve the experiences of students, faculty, and staff. Tech seeks to hire the first Enterprise AI & Automation Engineer.
The Enterprise AI & Automation Engineer serves as a technical resource within the IT Services department and is responsible for supporting the planning, development, implementation, and support of artificial intelligence, including agentic AI, automation, workflow improvement, and enterprise technology solutions that improve University operations. The position uses a forward-deployed, department-facing approach, working directly with university stakeholders to understand needs, develop practical solutions, and support successful implementation.
The position works with academic and administrative departments to understand operational needs, recommend appropriate technology solutions, and assist with the implementation of secure, supportable, and effective systems. The role considers the university's existing technology environment while maintaining awareness of broader enterprise platforms, integration options, and emerging AI and automation practices.
The Enterprise AI & Automation Engineer assists the University in moving approved technology opportunities from concept to implementation in a thoughtful, secure, and measurable manner while supporting institutional standards for data governance, information security, privacy, accessibility, and responsible use of technology.
The Enterprise AI & Automation Engineer serves as a technical liaison between IT Services and campus departments by gathering information, documenting business needs, defining requirements, and recommending practical technology solutions. This role designs, prototypes, implements, and supports AI, automation, workflow, reporting, integration, and agentic AI solutions that assist with task execution, workflow automation, decision support, service delivery, and other approved institutional use cases. The position supports the effective use of approved institutional systems, cloud services, automation platforms, collaboration tools, and related technologies while considering interoperability, long-term supportability, cost, risk, and alignment with institutional needs.
The Enterprise AI & Automation Engineer analyzes business processes to identify opportunities to reduce manual work, improve service delivery, strengthen decision-making, and create reusable technology patterns across the University. The role assists with integrating solutions with enterprise systems, data sources, application programming interfaces (APIs), identity services, reporting platforms, and campus applications in accordance with institutional architecture and support expectations. In addition, the position ensures that all solutions are developed and maintained in compliance with university expectations for data governance, information security, privacy, accessibility, FERPA, records retention, and the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
The successful candidate develops documentation, standards, training materials, and best practices that support the consistent and effective adoption of AI, automation, and enterprise technology solutions. The role participates in solution intake, prioritization, feasibility reviews, risk assessments, and value analysis in collaboration with IT leadership and appropriate governance groups. The Enterprise AI & Automation Engineer also provides training, workshops, demonstrations, documentation, knowledge transfer, and post-implementation support to enable campus stakeholders to identify, develop, and sustain approved agentic AI, automation, and technology-enabled process improvements. Finally, the position monitors supported solutions for reliability, usability, performance, security, adoption, and continued alignment with stakeholder and institutional needs.
Qualifications
A bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, information systems, data analytics, business technology, or a related field is required; an equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. The successful candidate will possess knowledge of current technological developments and trends related to artificial intelligence, automation, enterprise applications, data integration, and information systems, along with a working knowledge of enterprise technology platforms, cloud services, automation tools, collaboration systems, and related technologies used to support institutional operations. The candidate must demonstrate the ability to coordinate and support the development, enhancement, integration, and implementation of technology solutions from an institutional information services perspective, as well as the ability to interpret business needs, document requirements, evaluate solution options, and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders. Knowledge of application integration, data management, workflow automation, scripting, reporting, security, and identity/access management concepts preferred. Strong analytical, problem-solving, documentation, facilitation, interpersonal, and communication skills are essential. An understanding of data governance, privacy, accessibility, FERPA, information security, and the responsible use of institutional data is preferred.
Experience
Candidates should possess three to seven years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities of the position. Experience with agentic AI or AI coworker platforms, IT systems implementation, application development, automation, systems integration, business analysis, solution architecture, or enterprise application support is preferred. Experience in higher education, student information systems, learning management systems, CRM platforms, ERP systems, data governance, or regulated data environments is also preferred.
*Application materials must include a cover letter and resume. Applicants must be prepared to provide a written response to Tech's vision and mission statements. The position remains open until filled; a review of candidates will commence as application materials are received.
