Job Duties
Western State Hospital is expanding their Nursing leadership team by recruiting for an Assistant Chief Nurse Executive!
This position supports the Chief Nurse Executive in developing and implementing strategic initiatives for the Nursing Department. It provides direct supervision to nursing staff assigned to Harvest Mall and the Webb Learning Center, including the Mall Nurse, RNCs in long-term rehabilitation units, the RN Manager I - Informatics, the Scheduling Office and Supervisor, and licensed staff who deliver group activities in the Malls, Learning Center, or on the units, ensuring consistent alignment across service areas.
Key Responsibilities
• Helping to define objectives and standards of nursing care in alignment with each service area's treatment philosophy.
• Coordinating with Human Resources and Staff Development to support the onboarding and transition of new nursing staff in the Malls/Learning Center, Scheduling Office, Admissions Office, and licensed group activity roles.
• Ensuring effective implementation of milieu supports and individual treatment plans within Nursing Services.
• Conducting observations and chart reviews to monitor delivery of individual and group programming and evaluating nursing components for quality and effectiveness.
• Ensuring nursing practices align with professional standards and comply with WSH and DBHDS policies, with emphasis on risk management, recovery-oriented care, performance improvement, safety, efficiency, cost awareness, and staff retention.
The position requires strong computer and keyboarding skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, Excel) and the Electronic Medical Record system. Flexibility is also essential, as duties may require working various hours, shifts, and days as needed. This role requires working overtime during staffing emergencies at a 24/7 psychiatric hospital, including 16-hour shifts during the week or on weekends as needed, and being on call to support nursing as needed.

Minimum Qualifications
- Unrestricted Registered Nurse (RN) license, or license eligible, to practice nursing in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- Prior professional nursing supervisor and managerial experience.
- Extensive management experience with progressive leadership responsibilities.
- Comprehensive clinical knowledge and experience in psychiatric nursing for adult mental health populations (ages 18-64), including civil and forensic settings.
- Ability to manage multiple units, supervise personnel, and coordinate patient care activities effectively.
- Knowledge of the Mental Health System and the special needs of adult psychiatric and forensic populations.
- Strong communication skills (written, verbal, and sign, as required) with the ability to communicate clearly across all levels of staff.
- Ability to participate effectively in an interdisciplinary team and to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care.
- Knowledge of administrative and management principles, including program planning, implementation, budget development, and nursing supervision.
- Experience implementing nursing standards consistent with regulatory guidelines and participating in performance improvement processes.
- Understanding of recovery-oriented and trauma-informed care principles.
Additional Considerations
Veteran or Spouse of a veteran.
Bilingual - Spanish preferred.
Graduation from an accredited nursing program (BSN, MSN preferred).
Experience in nursing leadership preferred.
