What is an internship 3D printing?

Internship 3D Printing positions are temporary roles designed for students or recent graduates to gain hands-on experience in the field of 3D printing and additive manufacturing. Interns in these positions typically assist with operating 3D printers, designing 3D models using CAD software, troubleshooting printing issues, and collaborating on prototyping projects. These internships help individuals develop technical skills, understand industry workflows, and build a foundation for a career in 3D printing or related engineering and design fields.

What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during an internship in 3D printing?

As an intern in 3D printing, you'll likely assist with designing 3D models using CAD software, preparing files for print, and operating 3D printers under supervision. Your daily tasks may include troubleshooting print errors, performing post-processing on printed parts, and documenting results. You'll often collaborate with engineers, designers, and technicians, gaining hands-on experience with various 3D printing technologies and materials. This exposure provides valuable insight into the additive manufacturing workflow and helps build practical skills for future roles in the field.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an internship 3D printing, and why are they important?

To thrive in a 3D Printing Internship, you need a foundational understanding of 3D modeling, design principles, and familiarity with additive manufacturing processes, often supported by coursework in engineering, design, or related fields. Experience with CAD software (such as SolidWorks or AutoCAD), 3D printers, and slicing software is typically required. Strong problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication skills will make you stand out in collaborative and iterative project environments. These skills are crucial for producing accurate prototypes, troubleshooting technical issues, and contributing to innovation in a fast-evolving industry.

What is the difference between Internship 3D Printing vs 3D Printing Technician?

AspectInternship 3D Printing3D Printing Technician
CredentialsTypically students or entry-level, no formal certification requiredRelevant certifications or technical training often preferred
Work EnvironmentEducational or training setting, supervisedIndustrial or commercial manufacturing environment
ResponsibilitiesLearning, assisting, and supporting 3D printing projectsOperating, maintaining, and troubleshooting 3D printers

Internship 3D Printing roles focus on gaining hands-on experience and learning about 3D printing technology, often in educational settings. In contrast, 3D Printing Technicians are responsible for the day-to-day operation and maintenance of 3D printers in industrial environments. While internships are entry-level and educational, technician roles require more technical skills and experience.

Job description

SOFTWARE ENGINEERING INTERN (SUMMER 2027)

Freeform is deploying software-defined, autonomous metal 3D printing factories around the world, bringing the scalability of software to physical production. Our proprietary technology stack leverages advanced sensing, real-time controls, and data-driven learning to produce digitally verified, flawless parts at unprecedented speed and cost. Our mission is to make the transformative power of 3D printing available to all industries at scale and unlock the future of innovation.ย ย

As a Software Engineering Intern at Freeform, you'll help build the core software systems that power our autonomous metal 3D printing factories. You'll work with a talented engineering team from some of the world's most innovative companies across a range of projects to develop and maintain mission-critical infrastructure - including controls, high speed data acquisition, and geometry processing pipelines - that enable high-speed, high-quality, and fully automated production. This is a hands-on role where you'll contribute to real-world solutions that bridge software and hardware, and gain exposure to a fast-paced, multidisciplinary engineering environment. You'll be encouraged to take a first-principles approach to problem solving, explore new technical domains, and collaborate across teams to help bring complex systems to life.ย

3D printing experience is not required to be successful here - rather we look for smart, motivated, collaborative engineers who love solving hard problems and creating amazing technology!ย

Responsibilities:ย ย

  • Support the design and development of software for advanced, production-scale metal 3D printing systemsย ย
  • Collaborate with process, control, and mechanical engineers to help integrate control algorithms into production softwareย ย
  • Assist in improving and scaling high-rate data acquisition, storage, and retrieval systemsย ย
  • Contribute to the development of the software pipeline that converts customer part geometries into machine-ready print instructionsย ย

Basic Qualifications:ย ย

  • Currently enrolled in a bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering from an ABET accredited university or collegeย
  • Internship or engineering club experience such as FSAE, Baja SAE, solar car, rocket club, robotics club, or similar programming with C/C++ or Rust

Nice to Have:ย ย

  • Advanced degree (Master's or PhD) in computer science, computer engineering, or electrical engineering
  • Experience interfacing with microcontrollers, FPGA, or GPU computing hardwareย
  • Experience developing embedded or real-time software systemsย
  • Experience writing software for industrial automation systems, robotics, or related hardwareย
  • Experience working in a Linux environmentย
  • Comfortable working in fast-paced, ambiguous environments and iterating quickly (comfortable building the plane as we fly it)ย
  • Strong communicator who collaborates across disciplines and proactively seeks support when neededย
  • Willing to take ownership of tasks big and small, with a hands-on, problem-solving mindsetย
  • Strong work ethic with a refuse-to-fail mindsetย
  • Demonstrated indicators of excellence and/or achieving success against adversity (i.e. top academic performance, leadership in engineering clubs, first-generation college student, or other examples of resilience and achievement)ย

Location:ย ย

  • We are located in Hawthorne, CA in a 35,000 square foot, state-of-the-art facility featuring large open spaces for team collaboration, R&D, and production, as well as easy access to the 405, 105, and 110 freeways. Our facility is in the heart of Los Angeles' vibrant emerging tech ecosystem alongside many other high growth startups and enterprises.ย
