This position is responsible for providing health and safety (H&S) technical/regulatory support and program development for a pulp and paper mill in the U.S.  International Paper's Vicksburg Mill employs up to 400 team members, not including contractors.  This position would be responsible for providing support in maintaining safety management systems in order to eliminate occupational injuries and illnesses and to maintain compliance with U.S. H&S regulations.

This position reports directly to the mill H&S Manager and interacts with department H&S coordinators, occupational health services, and fire/emergency responders.  The EHS organization is led by the mill EHS manager who is a member of the mill's Lead Team and reports directly to the mill manager.

The Job You Will Perform: 

  • Assist with the management of the mill safety program by coordinating activities of the safety team, conducting safe work observations, evaluating the effectiveness of site programs, coordinating incident investigations, leading hazard/risk assessments and applying the hierarchy of controls to reduce exposure to safety hazards.

  • Assist with the management of the mill industrial hygiene program by performing qualitative exposure assessments, developing exposure monitoring strategies, conducting comprehensive exposure monitoring and assisting with the development of exposure control recommendations.

  • Conduct health and safety training for the mill team members and management.  Assist with scheduling, reviewing, preparing, documenting and tracking team member health and safety training sessions.

  • Assist with the implementation and management of company health and safety standards and program elements (e.g., hazard communication, powered industrial trucks, confined spaces, personal protective equipment selection, and moving equipment).

  • Assist in developing, gathering and maintaining health and safety data for routine reports, metrics and regulatory documents.

  • Conduct and provide support for Mill safety audits (internal and external). Act, in conjunction with the H&S Manager, as a company representative for external regulatory inspections, visits and communications.

  • Conduct accident and incident investigations, including accompanying team members to the hospital/doctor as needed.

  • Manage the mill's internal safety incident tracking system including entering safety incident reports, assigning corrective actions and ensuring action items are completed.

  • Support and participate in EHS Department requirements and activities, including weekend duty.

The Skills You Will Bring:

  • Four-year Degree in safety science (or related fields) or industrial safety knowledge/experience is preferred. 

  • Extensive knowledge of OSHA Safety regulations (general industry and/or construction) is required.

  • Must have excellent communications skills-- both verbal and written. Top of Form
