What is an international engineer?

An International Engineer is a professional who applies engineering principles and practices to projects that span multiple countries or regions. They often work with global teams, adapt to different regulatory environments, and may travel or relocate to oversee projects abroad. Their role includes designing, implementing, and managing engineering solutions while considering cultural, legal, and logistical differences across countries. International Engineers typically have strong technical skills, language proficiency, and cross-cultural communication abilities. They play a crucial role in global companies looking to expand or maintain international operations.

What does an international engineer do?

The job responsibilities of an international engineer involve performing engineering and design duties in a foreign country. In this career, you can work in a variety of engineering specialties, including manufacturing, civil, construction, a petroleum, or industrial design engineering. You may operate as a technical engineering consultant, working directly for a foreign-owned company or a global corporation. You may audit operations or oversee design efforts in an overseas plant, or you may help improve processes and practices for a manufacturing facility or oil and gas operation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an international engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an International Engineer, you need a strong background in engineering principles, a relevant engineering degree, and experience working on multinational projects. Proficiency with industry-standard design software (such as AutoCAD or SolidWorks), familiarity with international codes and standards, and, in some cases, professional engineering certification (like PE or equivalent) are commonly required. Strong cross-cultural communication, adaptability, and problem-solving skills help navigate diverse teams and global challenges. These competencies ensure effective collaboration, compliance with local regulations, and successful project delivery across different countries.

What are some common challenges faced by international engineers when working on cross-border projects?

International Engineers often navigate challenges such as coordinating with teams across different time zones, adapting to diverse regulatory standards, and overcoming language or cultural barriers. Managing complex logistics and ensuring compliance with local laws can also require extra diligence. Successful International Engineers are proactive communicators and flexible problem-solvers, able to adjust their approach to fit the needs of global stakeholders and project requirements.

What is the difference between International Engineer vs Mechanical Engineer?

AspectInternational EngineerMechanical Engineer
Required CredentialsBachelor's degree in engineering, often with international certifications or language skillsBachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, professional licensure varies by country
Work EnvironmentGlobal projects, multinational companies, often abroad or in diverse settingsDesign, analysis, manufacturing in industrial or corporate settings

Job description

Who We Are
Williams International is a privately-owned company that develops and manufactures jet engines for both military and commercial aircraft applications. We are a company of creators who deliver pioneering ideas and technologies that lead the aerospace industry. Our culture fosters creativity, collaboration, and continuous learning to position our team members to inspire each other and provide quality products and supporting services that exceed the expectations of our customers.
The Opportunity
Williams International is actively searching for an Aerodynamics Engineer who wants to apply their turbomachinery aerodynamics expertise in a cross-functional manner that extends beyond computation. This role is in a collaborative environment incorporating all aspects of development and production to support our existing engines and growing product line. Responsibilities include delivering aerodynamic designs and analyses of various turbomachinery flow path components, working with our expert in-house manufacturing team to ensure a producible design, and supporting engine and subsystem testing to provide design validation. This is an exciting opportunity to work on a broad spectrum of cutting-edge commercial and military gas turbine hardware with a high degree of ownership for aerodynamic performance throughout the product life cycle.
This position is 100% on-site.
Additionally, the Lead Engineer I - Aerodynamics will:

  • Deliver timely aerodynamic dispositions to production support requests on discrepant hardware and cost reduction initiatives
  • Train, mentor, and develop earlier-career aerodynamics engineers
  • Develop analytical tools and methods to drive accuracy, innovation, and efficiency while meeting cost and schedule commitments
  • Communicate analysis results and recommendations to internal and external customers, in both verbal presentation and written report formats

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master's Degree in Engineering required. Master's Degree preferred, but not required
  • 5+ years of relevant engineering experience in aerodynamic design and analysis
  • Demonstrated understanding of turbomachinery aerodynamics including compressible flow and heat transfer, as well as familiarity with manufacturing methods and real-world design limitations
  • Proficient in computational fluid dynamics and associated geometry generation and meshing tools, for example, methods similar to the following commercially available software modules: Fluent, CFX, Fine/Turbo, AXCENT, Pointwise
  • Experience with optimization methods similar to those available in commercial optimization software such as iSight, HEEDS, or modeFrontier
  • Experience in all phases of the product life cycle: conceptual design, detail design and optimization, testing, and production support
  • Ability to effectively communicate analysis results, conclusions, and recommendations with a strong focus on documentation and corporate knowledge retention
  • The candidate must be able to work independently and execute multiple projects simultaneously
  • U.S. Citizenship status required
  • Position requires the ability to obtain a U.S. Government Security Clearance, if needed.
