Job description

Role Overview

This role leads the development of embedded, safety-critical software supporting advanced aviation power and electronic systems. The position is responsible for managing a team of embedded software engineers focused on designing, developing, testing, and deploying real-time software applications within highly regulated aerospace environments. Working closely with cross-functional engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams, this role supports the full software lifecycle while ensuring compliance with industry standards including DO-178C.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and mentor a team of embedded software engineers supporting the development of aviation software systems.
  • Manage the full software development lifecycle including requirements, design, implementation, integration, testing, and deployment.
  • Oversee software projects requiring DO-178C compliance and ensure proper design reviews, verification, validation, and documentation activities are completed.
  • Develop and maintain embedded, real-time software applications for aerospace products and systems.
  • Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams to support seamless software and hardware integration.
  • Drive technical direction and continuous improvement efforts across software architecture, tools, processes, and development methodologies.
  • Support software configuration management activities and ensure adherence to established coding and development standards.
  • Provide coaching and technical guidance to junior engineers and support team development initiatives.
  • Coordinate with technical leads, program managers, and external stakeholders to support project execution and delivery.
  • Ensure project schedules, technical objectives, and quality requirements are achieved across multiple development efforts.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical field required.
  • 10+ years of experience developing embedded software systems within aerospace, aviation, or other safety-critical environments.
  • Previous experience leading or managing embedded software engineering teams required.
  • Strong understanding of DO-178C and software development processes for safety-critical systems.

Skills

  • Strong experience developing real-time embedded software applications.
  • Experience working with multi-threaded and real-time operating systems.
  • Proficiency with software development and debugging tools including in-circuit emulators, logic analyzers, and related test equipment.
  • Knowledge of software configuration management and complete software lifecycle processes.
  • Experience with avionics and databus communication protocols including ARINC 429, RS-232/422/485, and CAN.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving capabilities within complex embedded environments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
  • Fluent written and verbal English communication skills.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience supporting aerospace or aviation electronic systems development.
  • Background working within regulated, safety-critical environments.
  • Exposure to embedded GUI development, drivers, and hardware/software integration.
  • Experience supporting products requiring higher Design Assurance Levels (DAL C or above).
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies and cross-functional engineering collaboration.
  • Ability to travel up to 10% as needed.
