The Challenge

OneTrust is looking for a Staff Software Engineer to help lead technical direction for Developer Experience. This role solves complex problems that affect multiple engineering teams. You will build platforms, workflows, tooling, and AI resources that help engineers find information, complete common tasks, and deliver software with quality and speed.

Staff Engineers choose the approach for complex and unclear work. Their technical judgment carries beyond their immediate team.

Your Mission

Technical Leadership and Architecture

  • Lead design and architecture for major Developer Experience capabilities.
  • Choose methods for complex and ambiguous assignments without a set playbook.
  • Build and improve internal developer platforms, service catalogs, scorecards, self-service workflows, and integrations.
  • Connect developer tools to source control, CI/CD, observability, identity, cloud, and work-management systems.
  • Build and maintain practical AI tools, reusable skills, workflow integrations, and evaluation harnesses.
  • Shape solutions with engineering teams and Architecture before implementation starts.

Developer Enablement and Adoption

  • Treat engineering teams as internal customers.
  • Listen to their problems and explain trade-offs in clear language.
  • Help teams adopt the platforms, tools, and practices you build.
  • Share knowledge through clear documentation, training sessions, and office hours.
  • Define and track measures for adoption, task completion, developer feedback, and workflow improvement.

Responsible AI and Engineering Standards

  • Establish engineering practices that teams can adopt.
  • Promote responsible AI use for quality, security, privacy, governance, and cost.
  • Set practical standards for permissions, telemetry, evaluation, and tool support.
  • Keep a strong focus on outcomes for the engineering teams that use these platforms and resources.

Cross-Team Collaboration

  • Partner with engineering teams and Architecture before implementation starts.
  • Work with QA, SRE, InfoSec, IAM, and R&D Operations when an initiative needs their expertise.
  • Build working relationships and technical credibility beyond your immediate team.

Mentorship

  • Mentor Senior and mid-level engineers.
  • Help engineers grow their technical judgment and scope of ownership.
  • Help engineers use Developer Experience platforms and AI resources in their daily work.

You Are

  • You think in systems and trade-offs, not individual tickets.
  • You work well with complex and unclear problems.
  • You make sound technical decisions without a set playbook.
  • You gain trust through technical judgment and clear communication.
  • You enjoy working with internal customers.
  • You help other engineers adopt new tools and practices.
Your Experience Includes
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • A track record of leading technical initiatives across multiple engineers or systems.
  • Deep expertise in frontend or backend technologies or both, that support OneTrust's platform.
  • Experience with cloud architecture.
  • Hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools, such as Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, Devin, Windsurf, or similar tools, in a professional setting.
  • Genuine interest in applying AI to accelerate and improve software delivery in a responsible way.

Preferred

  • Experience building or operating software for engineering teams.
  • Experience implementing or operating an internal developer portal, such as Backstage or a comparable platform.
  • Experience with service catalogs, metadata standards, dependency views, engineering scorecards, scaffolding, or self-service workflows.
  • Experience integrating developer tools with source control, CI/CD, observability, identity, cloud, or work-management systems.
  • Experience taking an internal platform or engineering tool from design through rollout, support, and ongoing improvement.
  • Experience writing technical documentation and helping engineers adopt new tools or practices.
  • Experience building AI tools, reusable skills, workflow harnesses, evaluation workflows, or developer-facing automation.
  • Experience with identity, permissions, telemetry, governance, security, privacy, or cost controls for engineering tools.
  • Language and platform polyglot, or polyglot curious.

What Success Looks Like

  • Engineering teams find information and complete common tasks with less friction.
  • Engineering teams adopt supported platforms, tools, and workflows.
  • AI resources improve delivery while meeting quality, security, privacy, governance, and cost standards.
  • Engineering practices spread beyond the immediate team.
  • Engineers grow their technical judgment and scope of ownership.
