What is an intern writer?

Intern writers are individuals, often students or recent graduates, who work in writing roles within organizations to gain practical experience. They assist with tasks such as researching, drafting articles or content, editing, and contributing ideas under the supervision of senior writers or editors. This position helps them build their writing portfolio, develop industry skills, and make professional connections. Intern writer roles are commonly found in media companies, publishing houses, marketing agencies, and corporate communications departments.

What types of projects does an intern writer typically work on, and how are they supported by the editorial team?

Intern Writers often contribute to a range of projects such as drafting blog posts, assisting with research, editing existing articles, and creating social media content. They usually work under the guidance of editors or senior writers who provide feedback and mentorship throughout the process. Job description

Company Description
OUR NATIONAL CONVERSATION (ONC) seeks to reduce partisanship and promote effective solutions to America's challenges. Powered by America's youth, we host a media outlet, produce educational materials and facilitate dialogue intended to make America a better country.
Job Description
Job Title: Editorial Intern
Reports To: The Editorial Team Lead and the Managing Editor
The Editorial Intern contributes to ONC's mission of providing nonpartisan news, opinions, and policy solutions by completing essential tasks for the Editorial Team at ONC. The Editorial Desk is one of the last sets of eyes on everything ONC produces, including but not limited to books, policy proposals, solutions, op-eds, and newsletters. Editorial Interns will be responsible for correcting grammatical and stylistic errors in ONC written content, as well as fact-checking this content to prevent errors and maintain accuracy. Editorial Interns collaborate with our Policy Content Writers as well as the rest of the organization. They will keep in constant communication with the editorial team lead and managing editor about the status of current projects and deadlines. This intern may have the opportunity to learn how to operate the backend of our website to review external writers' submissions and approve them.
A competency assessment will be given to candidates who are selected for interviews. This assessment will simply require interviewed candidates to edit an article to resolve grammatical and stylistic errors.
This position is remote, with work primarily conducted over Zoom and Slack, so applicants must be comfortable coordinating in a remote environment and are expected to maintain a high level of communication. Interns must commit to at least a full semester. However, many people choose to extend their internship past the amount of time they initially committed to, provided their performance meets the required standards.
Benefits: Flexible schedule, college credit, professional networking, and resume-building experience.
Compensation: This is not a paid position.
Responsibilities:
  • Edit written content to maintain grammatical integrity for the ONC website and mobile app.
  • Ensure ONC's commitment to nonpartisanship, ideological diversity, and civil debate is reflected in all published work.
  • Participate in civil dialogue with conservative, progressive, and moderate writers.
  • Work with script writers and core content writers to ensure consistency in all written materials.
  • Fact-check written content to prevent errors and maintain accuracy.

Qualifications
The Editorial Intern should have the following skills, education, and experience:
  • Current student working towards a degree in English or Literature, Political Science, Journalism, Communications, and/or related fields.
  • Exceptional writing skills are required (English).
  • Proficient verbal communication/speaking skills are a plus.
  • High attention to detail.
  • Prior editing experience preferred, specifically with AP style.
  • Responsive, consistent, and effective communicator.
  • Ability to work remotely and on their own schedule in order to make deadlines.
  • Google Workspace experience preferred.
  • Ability to attend Organization-Wide meetings every other week.
  • Ability to attend weekly Editorial Team meetings.
  • Must be authorized to intern in the U.S.
