What is intern management?

Intern management refers to the process of overseeing and guiding interns within an organization. This includes recruiting, onboarding, training, assigning projects, providing feedback, and evaluating performance. Effective intern management ensures that interns gain valuable experience while contributing meaningfully to the company’s objectives. Managers in this role help bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world work, supporting interns’ professional growth.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Manager, you need experience in team leadership, program coordination, and a solid understanding of the organization's industry, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with project management tools, HR software, and onboarding systems is usually required. Exceptional communication, mentorship, and organizational skills help foster a positive and productive environment for interns. These skills ensure effective guidance, smooth program operations, and successful intern development within the organization.

What are some common challenges faced when managing interns, and how can they be addressed effectively?

One common challenge in intern management is balancing the interns' learning experiences with the team's productivity goals. Interns may require additional guidance and feedback as they acclimate to the workplace, which can be time-consuming for managers. To address this, it's helpful to establish clear onboarding procedures, set defined expectations, and create structured check-ins. Encouraging open communication and providing regular feedback ensures interns feel supported and helps managers track progress effectively. Additionally, pairing interns with mentors within the team can foster skill development and integration.

Job description

We are seeking a Project Management Intern to support our Project Management team in the day-to-day delivery of client projects. Working alongside Project Managers and cross-functional teams, the intern keeps schedules and project information current, captures next steps from internal meetings, and flags timing or resource issues early so they can be resolved. Success in this role is measured by reliable follow-through, attention to detail, clear communication, and curiosity about how agency projects come to life.
Responsibilities

  • Partner with Project Managers and cross-functional teams to gather project requirements and document milestones and project plans.
  • Assist with project execution by drafting timelines and scheduling internal meetings.
  • Enter and update project data in agency systems, including deliverables, timelines, resources, hours, and budgets, so scope, timing, and resourcing stay current.
  • Capture notes, recaps, and next steps from team check-ins and project meetings, and share updates with the team.
  • Help maintain the templates, workflow documentation, and process resources the team relies on.
  • Take on day-to-day tasks and ad hoc requests from the Project Management team as needs arise.

Desired Skills, Experience & Qualifications:
  • Currently pursuing a bachelor’s or associate degree in advertising, marketing, communications, business, or a related field; recent graduates also welcome.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining strong attention to detail.
  • Self-motivated, curious, and collaborative team player with a continuous improvement mindset who sees tasks through from start to finish with guidance and oversight.
  • Developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the confidence to ask questions and raise issues early.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong digital fluency across spreadsheets, and collaboration/project management platforms.
  • Comfort using AI-enabled productivity tools, with the judgment to spot limitations or errors in their output and keep work accurate, ethical, and aligned with project needs.
