What does an intern in journalism do?

An intern in journalism assists professional journalists and editors by researching stories, conducting interviews, fact-checking, transcribing notes, and sometimes writing articles or news briefs. Interns gain hands-on experience in a newsroom or media environment, learning about deadlines, editorial standards, and the process of publishing news. They may also help with administrative tasks, manage social media, or attend events to gather information. The internship provides valuable industry insight and networking opportunities for those interested in a journalism career.

What are some typical assignments and expectations for a journalism intern in a newsroom setting?

As a journalism intern, you can expect to assist with research, conduct interviews, write articles, and support senior reporters with fact-checking and editing. Interns are often given opportunities to pitch story ideas and may cover community events or breaking news under supervision. The role emphasizes learning newsroom workflows, meeting deadlines, and adapting to fast-paced environments. Collaboration with editors and reporters is common, allowing interns to receive feedback and build professional networks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern in journalism, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern in Journalism, you need strong writing, research, and interviewing skills, often supported by or pursuing a degree in journalism, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), social media platforms, and basic photo or video editing tools is typically expected. Curiosity, attention to detail, and effective communication help interns stand out when pitching stories or collaborating with editors.
