Role Description

The Special Education Program Intern is an on-site internship position supporting the daily operation of EduBud’s adult special needs program in Suwanee, GA.

Interns work directly alongside EduBud staff and participants, providing additional on-site support during educational activities, social programming, functional life-skills instruction, and daily routines. This role is ideal for individuals seeking hands-on experience in special education, disability services, psychology, social work, speech-language pathology, occupational therapy, or related fields.

Day-to-day responsibilities may include assisting participants during structured activities, supporting transitions and routines, preparing program materials, modeling appropriate social and communication skills, assisting with group activities, providing additional supervision and support, and helping maintain a safe, organized, and positive learning environment.

Interns will gain direct experience working with adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities while learning practical strategies related to communication, behavior support, independence, social development, and community-based education.

This is an unpaid, semester-based internship. EduBud can provide verified internship/volunteer hours, professional mentorship, letters of recommendation upon successful completion, and additional documentation or resources for qualifying academic programs.

Program hours:

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday & Friday

10:00 AM – 2:30 PM

Interns are not required to attend all four days. However, applicants must establish a consistent weekly schedule and commit to that schedule for the semester, as consistency and reliability are especially important for the individuals we serve.

Qualifications

* Strong interest in working with adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities.

* Patient, dependable, compassionate, and comfortable working in a highly interactive environment.

* Ability to follow established program procedures, staff direction, participant support plans, and safety expectations.

* Strong communication and interpersonal skills when working with participants, staff, families, and other interns.

* Ability to provide appropriate support during educational activities, transitions, social interactions, and daily routines.

* Reliable attendance and ability to commit to an agreed-upon weekly schedule through December 2026.

* Ability to maintain professional boundaries, participant confidentiality, and respectful communication.

* Willingness to learn strategies related to special education, communication support, behavior support, and independent living skills.

* Currently enrolled in or recently graduated from a relevant academic program preferred, including Education, Special Education, Psychology, Social Work, Human Services, Speech-Language Pathology, Occupational Therapy, or a related field.

* Future teachers and individuals seeking field experience or required program hours are strongly encouraged to apply.

* Previous experience working with individuals with disabilities is preferred but not required. Training and guidance will be provided.

This internship is especially well suited for students seeking meaningful, hands-on field experience that goes beyond observation. Interns will become active members of the EduBud program team and gain practical experience that can support future careers in education, disability services, therapy, human services, and related professions.
