Intern Hardware Integration Engineer information

What does an intern hardware integration engineer do?

An Intern Hardware Integration Engineer supports the design, development, and testing of hardware systems by assisting with the integration of various electronic components and subsystems. Their responsibilities typically include assembling hardware prototypes, running diagnostic tests, documenting results, and collaborating with teams to troubleshoot and resolve integration issues. This role provides hands-on experience with hardware platforms and tools, preparing interns for future engineering positions in the hardware field.

What types of projects and responsibilities can an intern hardware integration engineer expect to work on during their internship?

As an Intern Hardware Integration Engineer, you can expect to work on tasks such as assembling and testing hardware components, assisting in troubleshooting integration issues, and collaborating with cross-functional engineering teams. You'll likely help document hardware configurations, run diagnostic tests, and support the integration of new devices into larger systems. This role offers hands-on experience with both hardware and software, and you'll gain insight into the collaborative problem-solving process that ensures different components work seamlessly together.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern hardware integration engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intern Hardware Integration Engineer, you need a solid understanding of electronics, circuit design, and embedded systems, often supported by coursework or a degree in electrical or computer engineering. Familiarity with tools like oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, PCB design software (such as Altium or Eagle), and basic programming languages is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with cross-functional teams and resolve integration challenges. These skills and qualities are essential for successfully contributing to hardware projects and ensuring reliable system performance.

What is the difference between Intern Hardware Integration Engineer vs Intern Electronics Engineer?

Could you be the full-time Interlocking (IXL) Hardware Design Engineer in Toronto, ON, we're looking for?

Your future role

Take on a new challenge and apply your technical expertise in a cutting-edge field. You'll work alongside collaborative and innovative teammates.

You'll play a pivotal role in ensuring the safe and efficient movement of trains by designing and standardizing Interlocking (IXL) system architectures and configurations. Day-to-day, you'll work closely with teams across the business (Project IXL Design Leaders, V&V teams, Installation & Testing teams), analyze customer and product requirements, and contribute to continuous improvement in hardware solutions.

You'll specifically take care of designing hardware configurations, power distribution architectures, and documentation for signaling equipment, but also support project deployment and debugging activities.

We'll look to you for:

  • Delivering design scheme plan layouts, hardware configuration drawings, BOPs, BOMs, and signaling equipment room layouts.

  • Designing AC/DC power distribution architectures, including main distribution panels and subpanels for redundant signaling systems.

  • Performing power load analysis and designing backup power configurations using battery backups, UPS, and automatic transfer switches.

  • Ensuring adherence to reference application design methods and tools, requesting deviations when necessary.

  • Participating actively in IXL detailed design review meetings and providing activity progress reports.

  • Organizing and producing hardware design deliverables in accordance with project templates and requirements.

  • Supporting project teams in debugging design issues and analyzing design change requests.

  • Defining pre-fitted solutions for IXL equipment, including racks, cubicles, and cabling, while ensuring proper testing and documentation.

  • Collaborating with multidisciplinary teams to capture hardware interfaces, environmental conditions, and application constraints.

  • Sharing knowledge of IXL system architecture features with the engineering community.
