Job description

The GIS Student Intern 2 supports storm water infrastructure operations by conducting field inspections and collecting geospatial data for integration into Wayne County's GIS systems. Interns will work closely with storm water structure cleaning crews to document real-time inspection data, ensuring accurate tracking and long-term asset management.

This position is highly field-based and requires extended hours outdoors and in county vehicles. Interns will gain hands-on experience in GIS applications, infrastructure inspection, and civil/environmental systems.

  • Educational Requirements:
    • Current enrollment in an accredited college or university
    • Preferred fields of study:
    • GIS / Geomatics
    • Civil or Environmental Engineering
    • Geography
    • Environmental Science or related field
  • Experience Requirements:
    • Familiarity with ArcGIS or similar GIS platforms preferred
    • Basic experience with data collection or fieldwork is a plus
    • Valid driver's license required
  • Required knowledge
    • Excellent research and problem-solving skillsBasic understanding of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and data collection methods
    • Familiarity with mobile GPS systems and spatial data entry
    • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook, SharePoint)
    • Ability to analyze, document, and report field data accurately

    • Understanding of basic surveying concepts and measurement techniques

    • Record structure attributes including:
    • Location and type
    • Lid dimensions (length/width)
    • Pipe depth, count, and direction
    • Structural condition and damage observations
    • Measure invert elevations using basic surveying tools
    • Monitor cleaning progress and ensure accurate, real-time data entry
    • Submit daily reports including:
    • Number of structures cleaned
    • Linear footage of pipes cleaned
    • Vac-truck usage metrics (fills/empties)
    • Communicate updates via text, email, and reporting systems
    • Maintain consistent presence on-site during operations
    • Assist in identifying maintenance or repair needs
