Position Summary

The Sun Prairie Area School District is seeking a creative and talented storyteller to join the Strategic Communications team in a part-time role.

At the heart of this position is storytelling. The Digital Media & Communications Specialist will discover and share the people, moments, programs, accomplishments, and experiences that tell the story of SPASD. This person will spend time throughout the District identifying stories, interviewing students and staff, writing compelling content, and capturing photos and video that bring those stories to life.

The ideal candidate is a strong and creative writer who is curious, enjoys connecting with people, and has an eye for a great story. Working closely with the Director of Strategic Communications and Spokesperson, this position will create original content for district publications, the SPASD website, newsletters, social media, and other communications channels.

Key Responsibilities

  • Proactively identify and develop compelling stories about SPASD students, staff, schools, programs, accomplishments, and community partnerships.
  • Visit schools, classrooms, programs, and district events to gather stories and original content.
  • Interview students, staff, families, and community partners and develop engaging features, profiles, articles, and other content.
  • Write and edit high-quality content for district publications, the website, newsletters, social media, and other communication channels.
  • Develop creative approaches to written, visual, video, and digital storytelling.
  • Capture photography and short-form video to complement and strengthen district stories.
  • Support the writing and development of major district publications, including the annual school calendar, back-to-school newsletter, annual report, and other districtwide communications.
  • Build relationships throughout the District to develop a strong pipeline of stories and identify voices and experiences that may otherwise go untold.
  • Collaborate with the Strategic Communications team on storytelling campaigns, creative concepts, and special projects.
  • Assist with editing, proofreading, fact-checking, and preparing content for publication.

Experience & Skills

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong writing, interviewing, editing, and storytelling skills.
  • A natural curiosity and ability to recognize and develop a compelling story.
  • Strong creative instincts and an ability to develop engaging content across different formats.
  • Experience writing feature stories, profiles, articles, or other narrative-driven content.
  • Photography and/or video storytelling skills.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and comfort connecting with students, staff, families, and community members.
  • The ability to work independently, take initiative, and move a story from idea to completion.
  • Strong attention to detail, organization, and commitment to accuracy.
  • The ability to tell stories about diverse students, families, staff, and communities authentically and respectfully.

Education & Experience

High school diploma or equivalent required.

College coursework, a degree, or relevant experience in journalism, communications, English, creative writing, public relations, digital media, marketing, or a related field is preferred.

Professional, freelance, student media, journalism, photography, videography, or other demonstrated storytelling experience may be considered in place of formal education in a related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience conducting interviews and developing stories from beginning to end.
  • Experience with photography and/or video production.
  • Experience creating content for websites, newsletters, publications, or digital platforms.
  • Familiarity with content management systems, Canva, and/or Adobe Creative Suite is a plus.
  • Experience in education, journalism, nonprofit communications, or community-focused organizations is a plus.

Writing samples, photography, video, or other examples of storytelling and creative work may be requested as part of the selection process.
