Job description

Summary
We are currently looking for a Corporate Accounting Intern to join our highly motivated and innovative Corporate Accounting & Finance ("CAF") team. The Intern will be involved in the accounts payable process as well as general ledger accounting for Harbor Capital Advisors and its subsidiaries (the "company"). In this role, you will have the opportunity to be part of a collaborative team and an integral part of preparing key financial data for the company.
The CAF department is overseen by the Corporate Controller and is comprised of two teams, Operational Accounting and Financial Reporting. Both teams are comprised of two accountants. This position reports directly to the Assistant Controller, Operations.
Key Responsibilities
General Ledger & Reporting
  • Record cash activity real-time
  • Assist with monthly and quarterly close activities
  • Prepare journal entries and account reconciliations
  • Help maintain accurate accounting records
  • Gather information for ad hoc reporting requests
  • Gather requested information as part of the annual external financial statement audits
  • Continuously evaluate existing processes to increase efficiency and effectiveness through automation

Accounts Payable (AP)
  • Ensure appropriate approval of invoices prior to payment
  • Code invoices to the appropriate expense account (spend category) with related worktags
  • Work with vendors to resolve invoice discrepancies
  • Run the weekly AP cycle to initiate all vendor payments, including issuing checks and wires
  • Set up new vendors and obtain ACH instructions from current vendors
  • Create, record, and track month-end and year-end expense accruals
  • Interact regularly with internal personnel in accounting and other departments

Employee Expense Reports
  • Review and approve employee expense reports
  • Ensure each line item is coded to the proper expense account
  • Follow up with employees to obtain required documentation if needed
  • Run the weekly expense report cycle to post the expenses
  • Train new hires on use of the corporate credit card & submitting expenses in Workday

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance (or actively pursuing)
  • 0-2 years of AP, general ledger, and reconciliation experience preferred
  • Experience using Microsoft Teams or similar instant messaging/video software
  • CPA eligible

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
  • Great organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure accurate reporting of expenses
  • Strong communication skills, both written and oral
  • Proven ability to meet deadlines and work well in a hybrid work environment
  • Work efficiently independently, but also be flexible to meet with your team in-person or virtually

Compensation Pay Range: $20 - $25 per hour
