What is an intern cosmetologist?

Intern cosmetologists are students or recent graduates who are gaining hands-on experience in the beauty industry under the supervision of licensed professionals. They typically work in salons or spas, performing basic beauty services such as hair washing, blow drying, and assisting with various treatments. This internship period allows them to apply their classroom knowledge, develop practical skills, and fulfill any required training hours needed for state licensure. Internships are a crucial step for aspiring cosmetologists to build confidence, improve their technique, and connect with potential employers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intern cosmetologist?

To thrive as an Intern Cosmetologist, you need a foundational understanding of hair, skin, and nail care, typically gained through enrollment in a state-approved cosmetology program. Familiarity with salon tools, sanitation standards, and scheduling or booking software is essential. Strong interpersonal skills, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn help interns build client trust and adapt to the fast-paced salon environment. These skills and qualities are crucial for delivering quality service, ensuring client satisfaction, and advancing within the beauty industry.

What types of hands-on experience can I expect as an intern cosmetologist, and how closely will I work with licensed professionals?

As an intern cosmetologist, you'll gain hands-on experience by assisting with basic hair, skin, and nail services under the supervision of licensed cosmetologists. You'll often observe consultations, help with client preparation, and gradually participate in performing services as your skills develop. Interns typically work closely with experienced professionals, receiving guidance and feedback to improve techniques and customer service skills. This environment fosters learning and confidence, helping you transition smoothly into a full-time cosmetology role after licensure.

What is the difference between Intern Cosmetologist vs Cosmetologist?

AspectIntern CosmetologistCosmetologist
CredentialsState-approved training, cosmetology school enrollmentLicensed after completing training and passing exams
Work EnvironmentTraining salons, supervised settingsFull-service salons, spas, salons
Industry UsageEntry-level, training phaseProfessional, independent practice

The main difference is that an Intern Cosmetologist is in training and gaining experience under supervision, while a Cosmetologist is fully licensed and authorized to work independently. Interns are still completing their education, whereas licensed Cosmetologists have met all certification requirements and can provide a full range of beauty services.

Can I go to cosmetology school with no experience?

Yes, cosmetology schools typically accept students with no prior experience. They provide training on skills such as hair cutting, coloring, and styling, and often require students to complete a certain number of hours before licensing. No experience is usually necessary to enroll and start learning the fundamentals of cosmetology.

About Great Clips

Sourced by ZipRecruiter

Great Clips, Inc. was established in Minneapolis, Minnesota by founders David Rubenzer and Steve Lemmon in 1982, a time when most people received haircuts in one of three ways: in full-service hair salons, from barbershops or at home. As a stylist and businessman, David could see that the industry was changing. Customers were looking for a hair salon service that could fit their busy lifestyles and desire for value. To be part of that change – rather than find themselves competing with it – David and Steve developed the then-radical concept of a walk-in haircare salon with weekend and evening hours, offering customers a select list of services, and providing benefits for stylists. After the founders opened several successful hair salons, Ray Barton joined David and Steve as an owner in March 1983. With Ray's help and expertise in franchising, the trio set about growing the Great Clips hair salon brand. That success continues through today.
