Job description

Job Purpose

Dana TM4 is a wholly owned subsidiary of Dana Incorporated. Dana TM4 develops and manufactures electric motors, generators, power electronics, and high- and low-voltage control systems for the commercial, passenger, sports, and recreational vehicle markets, as well as for the marine, rail, and mining sectors.

Dana TM4 contributes to achieving the highest possible energy conversion efficiencies through its expertise in permanent magnet motors, thermal management, winding technologies, external rotor topology, and control algorithms.

As a Mechanical Design Intern, you will join the Advanced Engineering team within the Engineering Department, which is responsible for the development of traction motors and high-voltage electronic products for electric vehicles.

You will contribute to the mission of the Advanced Engineering team, which is to mature new technologies and innovations that enable the motors and electronic products developed to stand out in the market.

The team supports the various technology roadmaps maintained by the product development and product planning groups, as well as representatives from the light vehicle, commercial vehicle, and off-highway business units. It is responsible for delivering technology evaluation and demonstration projects, mitigating technical risks, and sharing the results. In addition, the team promotes and supports technology transfer in partnership with product development teams.

Job Duties and Responsibilities
  • Lead and/or participate in the design and development of new high-speed motor technologies and traction inverters or their components, considering multiphysics constraints
  • Model and design parts and assemblies for motor prototypes, electronic products, and experimental proof-of-concept system
  • Perform tolerance stack-up calculations
  • Produce manufacturing drawings under supervision
  • Lead or participate in all phases of Advanced Engineering projects, including defining objectives and risks, activity planning, design,sourcing and prototype manufacturing, experimental validation, documentation, and results sharing
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team (Electromagnetics, Electronics, Software, Mechanical Engineering) to achieve objectives and solve problems
  • Lead or support laboratory and test bench activities
  • Supervise and support technicians and assemblers when required
  • Conduct and participate in risk analyses and failure mode evaluations
  • Integrate functional safety principles
  • Contribute to establishing, maintaining, and improving processes
  • Lead or participate in design reviews for Advanced Engineering projects, involving members of product development teams
  • Participate in product development design reviews
  • Maintain awareness of state-of-the-art technologies internally and externally to recommend relevant adjustments to Advanced Engineering projects
  • Collaborate with internal and external Dana partners, including specialized companies, national laboratories, and universities, both locally and internationally
Education and Qualifications

Currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering

Skills and Competencies
  • Experience with CAD software (asset: NX)
  • Basic knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
  • Curiosity, resourcefulness, autonomy, and results-oriented decision-making
  • Humility, resilience, and openness to feedback and new ideas
  • Knowledge of metal and plastic part manufacturing processes
  • Interest and ability to develop and apply multidisciplinary, both theoretical and practical, skills to achieve results
  • Awareness of intellectual property protection
  • Project management skills: ability to assess technical risks and workload, build and maintain schedules and budgets, communicate issues, and plan mitigation strategies
  • Functional proficiency in French and English
  • Asset: Experience in rotating machine mechanical design

Internship Details

The internship will be carried out under the direct supervision of the Technical Design Lead within the Advanced Engineering group. The workweek is 37.5 hours, starting no later than 9:00 a.m. each day, and may include remote work upon request by the intern.
Dana TM4 offers a shuttle service from Longueuil metro station in the morning and evening to facilitate commuting to the Boucherville site.
