Job description

Job Summary: The Intermodal Dispatcher is responsible for coordinating the movement of containers between ports, rail yards, and customer facilities. This position ensures on-time delivery and pick-up of freight, communicates with drivers, customers, and terminals, and resolves issues related to scheduling, equipment availability, and transportation delays. The role requires strong organizational and problem-solving skills, along with the ability to thrive in a fast-paced logistics environment.
Essential Responsibilities:
· Dispatch and monitor drivers for local and regional intermodal operations.
· Schedule and track container pick-ups and deliveries from ports, rail yards, and customer locations.
· Coordinate chassis and container equipment needs; monitor per diem and storage charges to minimize costs.
· Communicate with rail and port terminals regarding appointment scheduling, gate hours, and equipment requirements.
· Track and trace containers to ensure timely delivery and resolve service delays proactively.
· Provide timely updates to customers regarding shipment status, exceptions, and ETAs.
· Maintain compliance with port, rail, and customer requirements.
· Document and escalate service issues with customers, drivers, and vendors as needed.
· Build and maintain strong working relationships with drivers, customers, and carriers.
· Collaborate with management to achieve company goals and service standards.
· Perform other related duties as assigned.
Required Skills amp; Abilities:
· Intermodal or trucking dispatch experience required (port/rail preferred).
· Strong knowledge of intermodal operations, container movements, and related documentation.
· Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
· Proficiency in Microsoft Office and transportation management systems (TMS).
· Strong customer service and problem-solving skills.
· Excellent organizational and communication skills (verbal and written).
· Ability to multitask and prioritize competing demands.
· Team-oriented with the ability to work independently when needed.
