What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Intermediate Software Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intermediate Software Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C#), software development principles, and typically a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and relevant frameworks is expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help developers navigate complex projects and work well within teams. These skills and qualities are vital for building robust software solutions, ensuring code quality, and contributing positively to project outcomes.

What are some typical challenges that Intermediate Software Developers face when transitioning from junior roles?

Intermediate Software Developers often encounter challenges such as taking on more complex projects, balancing multiple priorities, and increasing responsibility for code quality and maintainability. At this level, you'll likely be expected to contribute to architectural decisions, mentor junior developers, and collaborate more closely with cross-functional teams such as QA and product management. Navigating these new expectations requires effective communication, strong problem-solving skills, and a proactive approach to continuous learning. Embracing feedback and seeking guidance from senior team members can help you grow and succeed in this role.

What are intermediate software developers?

Intermediate software developers are professionals with a few years of experience in software development, typically ranging from 2 to 5 years. They possess a solid understanding of programming languages, software design principles, and development tools. Unlike junior developers, intermediate developers are expected to work more independently, contribute to larger projects, and may mentor less experienced team members. They often collaborate with other developers, designers, and stakeholders to build, test, and maintain software applications.

Job description

hOS is an early-stage technology company founded in 2021 by several DataRobot alumni and former executives, including founder and former CEO Jeremy Achin. The company is operating in stealth-mode developing scalable technologies and AI-driven products that will make significant positive change in the world.

About the role

In this role, you will engineer and develop the frontend that will serve 10s of millions of users. There is no legacy codebase which means you don't need to suffer from old poor-written code, you need to write clean code from scratch. As one of the first engineers in the company, you will be responsible for ensuring the code style is implemented consistently across the codebase right from the start. Keeping the code modular and easy to read is one of the top priorities.

At the same time, as a start-up, we are moving at a fast pace, so you need to be agile and focus on delivering software that does the job first and then improve it step by step. You will work directly with the founding team.

Responsibilities
  • Develop frontend (the framework doesn't matter as long as you can effectively use it)

  • Deliver efficient code that does the job first and iteratively improve it later

  • Adhere to code guidelines and keep co-workers accountable for it as well

  • Ship code that is easy to read, maintain and debug. Be on top of all most recent code practices, libraries and frameworks and push the team to use better tools. Conduct thoughtful code reviews for your team members

Basic qualifications
  • 3+ years of experience as a frontend developer

  • Proficiency in unit/integration testing

  • Good understanding of how to implement useful logging

  • The skill of documenting your own code (writing useful comments)

  • You iterate quickly with short feedback loops

  • You're comfortable with change and ambiguity and thrive working autonomously

  • English level - Intermediate or higher

  • Experienced using self-improvement apps (habit trackers, time management tools, fitness trackers, etc.)

Preferred qualifications
  • Previous experience working at high growth start-ups

  • Previous experience working with distributed teams in different time zones

  • Previous experience building backends to support millions of users

We are an equal opportunity employer and select individuals best matched for the job based upon job-related qualifications regardless of race, religion, color, creed, sex, sexual orientation, age, ancestry, national origin, gender identity, genetic information, disability, pregnancy, veteran or military status or any other status or characteristic protected by law.
