Intermediate Software Developer information

What is an intermediate software developer?

Intermediate software developers are professionals with a few years of experience in software development, typically ranging from 2 to 5 years. They possess a solid understanding of programming languages, software design principles, and development tools. Unlike junior developers, intermediate developers are expected to work more independently, contribute to larger projects, and may mentor less experienced team members. They often collaborate with other developers, designers, and stakeholders to build, test, and maintain software applications.

What are some typical challenges that intermediate software developers face when transitioning from junior roles?

Intermediate Software Developers often encounter challenges such as taking on more complex projects, balancing multiple priorities, and increasing responsibility for code quality and maintainability. At this level, you'll likely be expected to contribute to architectural decisions, mentor junior developers, and collaborate more closely with cross-functional teams such as QA and product management. Navigating these new expectations requires effective communication, strong problem-solving skills, and a proactive approach to continuous learning. Embracing feedback and seeking guidance from senior team members can help you grow and succeed in this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate software developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intermediate Software Developer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as Java, Python, or C#), software development principles, and typically a bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and relevant frameworks is expected. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help developers navigate complex projects and work well within teams. These skills and qualities are vital for building robust software solutions, ensuring code quality, and contributing positively to project outcomes.

Job description

Knix is an award-winning intimate apparel and activewear brand that is re-inventing intimates for real life. Through our innovative products and our engaged community, we are empowering people everywhere to be unapologetically free.  Launched in 2013, we are one of the fastest-growing intimate apparel brands in North America and are globally recognized as an innovator within the apparel space.  We reach over 3 million customers through our online stores, Knix retail locations across North America and channels such as wholesale and Amazon.  We are revolutionizing the apparel industry with our best-in-class customer experience, innovative products and brands Knix, Kt by Knix, and Mntd.  Come join us if you are looking for a purpose-driven and authentic career!

The Shopify Plus Web Developer will build, scale, and maintain enterprise-grade e-commerce experiences using modern Shopify Plus capabilities, including features introduced in the latest Shopify Editions. This role combines deep technical execution with strong collaboration: you will align with and uphold our engineering standards through peer PR reviews, active participation in our development cycles, team-based problem solving, and shared ownership of scalable development environments and release pipelines.
You will work in a Shopify Plus ecosystem leveraging Shopify Functions, Shopify Markets, Checkout Extensibility, metaobjects, automation, and structured content models, while ensuring performance, stability, and operational excellence. This is a hybrid role, with the expectation to be in the Toronto office three days a week to collaborate closely with the team.

About You:
  • You thrive in a team environment, contributing positively through PR reviews, constructive feedback, and collaborative problem solving.

  • You have a proven ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across teams.

  • You care deeply about the quality of your work and the experience customers have on the site.

  • You take ownership of your work without ego- you're open to feedback, quick to help, and willing to learn from mistakes.

  • You care not only about the health of the website, but also about the health of the team and how you show up as a collaborator.

  • You are passionate about software development and technology, and you're always asking "Why not?" when presented with a challenging problem.

  • You're comfortable navigating ambiguity and collaborating with others to find the right solution, even when requirements evolve.

  • You communicate clearly and thoughtfully, whether you're leaving a PR comment, explaining a tradeoff, or partnering with non-technical teammates.

  • You want to work somewhere that welcomes everyone - not just tech-folk.

The Opportunity:
  • Provide technical expertise and guidance on Shopify Plus web development.

  • Review business requirements to determine the best design for quality, performant, and scalable web experiences.

  • Work with the integrations team to design flexible, scalable solutions that leverage third-party systems.

  • Occasionally work with databases to enhance website functionality.

  • Partner with product, design, UX, QA, and marketing teams to deliver high-quality storefront experiences.

  • Communicate technical tradeoffs, risks, and solutions clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

  • Proactively identify risks related to Shopify platform changes, deprecations, and Editions updates.

  • Contribute to a collaborative engineering culture through PR reviews, mentorship, and problem-solving.

  • Actively participate in all aspects of the agile process-including daily stand-ups, backlog refinement, sprint planning, and retrospectives-and leverage experience with both Kanban and sprint-based workflows to help the team deliver efficiently and predictably.

  • Help build a collaborative engineering culture where developers feel supported and encouraged to grow. Mentor junior and intermediate team members through pairing, PR reviews, and casual coaching, and promote good engineering habits through documentation, knowledge sharing, and open, constructive discussions.

  • Move software features or bug tickets through Knix's bug tracking process, from realization, to review, to pointing, implementation, and deployment.

  • Work with the QA team to understand changes and test cases to ensure quality in your solutions.

  • Attend regular company meetings to ensure alignment on daily, weekly and monthly objectives.

Qualifications:
  • Experience developing, customizing, and maintaining Shopify Plus themes using Liquid, HTML, CSS, JavaScript (ES6+), and responsive frontend architecture. Experience with TypeScript, Rust, or React is a plus.

  • Knowledge of accessibility (WCAG), enterprise SEO, and experimentation or A-B testing.

  • Hands-on experience with Checkout Extensibility, using app-based UI extensions and supported APIs while avoiding deprecated patterns.

  • Experience building advanced commerce logic using Shopify Functions for discounts, shipping, cart transformations, and payment customization.

  • Strong understanding of GitHub environments, CI/CD pipelines, and automated deployment workflows to support scalable, repeatable, and safe releases.

  • Experience supporting multi-store and multi-market setups using Shopify Markets, including region-specific pricing, currency, and content strategies.

  • Experience designing flexible data models using metaobjects and advanced metafields to support scalable merchandising and content needs.

  • Proven ability to own features end-to-end, from development through QA, release, and post-deployment monitoring, including accountability for bugs and driving improvements to prevent recurrence.

  • Experience adapting to Shopify platform changes, deprecations, and new Editions features in production environments.

  • Working knowledge of secure development practices, including least-privilege access and safe third-party integrations.

  • Experience working on high-traffic, revenue-critical Shopify Plus storefronts where uptime and stability are essential, including occasional after-hours support when critical issues arise.

Salary:
  • Annual salary starting at $95,000.00 CAD
