What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Intermediate Full Stack Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Intermediate Full Stack Developer, you need solid proficiency in front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, and a backend language like Node.js, Python, or Java), along with experience in database management and version control systems. Familiarity with frameworks (e.g., React, Angular, Express), cloud services, and tools like Git is typically required, and certifications in relevant technologies can be advantageous. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and teamwork distinguish high-performing developers in this role. These combined technical and interpersonal skills are crucial for efficiently building, deploying, and maintaining robust, user-friendly web applications in collaborative environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Intermediate Full Stack Developers when balancing front-end and back-end responsibilities?

Intermediate Full Stack Developers often encounter the challenge of effectively managing tasks across both front-end and back-end domains, which requires staying updated with rapidly evolving technologies on both sides. Coordinating the integration of user interfaces with server logic, ensuring seamless communication between components, and maintaining code quality across the stack can be demanding. Additionally, they frequently collaborate with UI/UX designers, DevOps engineers, and QA teams, making strong communication and time management skills essential. Addressing these challenges provides valuable experience and prepares developers for more advanced roles in the future.

What is an Intermediate Full Stack Developer?

An Intermediate Full Stack Developer is a software professional with a few years of experience who is proficient in both front-end and back-end web development. They are capable of working on the user interface, server-side logic, databases, and APIs, often collaborating with other team members to build and maintain web applications. Intermediate developers have moved beyond entry-level tasks, can work independently on moderately complex projects, and are familiar with industry-standard tools and frameworks. Their role often includes troubleshooting, optimizing code, and contributing to architecture decisions while still learning and expanding their skill set.

Can I become a full stack developer with no experience?

Becoming an intermediate full stack developer typically requires gaining experience through self-study, coding projects, or formal education in programming languages like JavaScript, Python, or Java, as well as understanding front-end and back-end frameworks. While it is possible to start with no experience, progressing to an intermediate level usually involves building a portfolio and acquiring practical skills over time.

Paradigm is a software company transforming the way that the residential, construction & building product industries operate across the globe. We are looking for a Senior Manager, Software Engineering โ€“ Estimate to be part of revolutionizing these industries. We are building the future of how homes are designed, estimated, and built by revolutionizing construction workflows with modern software engineering, agent-assisted systems, and mobile-first experiences. We are powered by our parent company, Builders FirstSource (NYSE: BLDR): a Fortune 300 company with over $23 billion in revenue and more than 29,000 employees across 550+ locations, BFS is redefining construction through data, digital infrastructure, and AI-powered innovation.

Weโ€™re seeking a Senior Manager, Software Engineering โ€“ Estimate to lead teams building estimation systems for residential construction. This role blends modern software engineering with intelligent automation to create user experiences where AI agents collaborate with construction professionals on plan interpretation, quantity takeoffs, and cost estimation.

You will lead the collaborative development of a sustainable, scalable technical strategy while driving team performance through engineering best practices. In this role, youโ€™ll work closely with developers, product analysts, product managers, and QA in an agile environment.

Youโ€™ll guide engineering teams in building scalable, composable systems that support agent-assisted workflows, delivering speed, accuracy, and efficiency to estimators in the field. Success in this role means guiding your teams in delivering production-grade platforms where human expertise is enhanced by intelligent automation, resulting in measurable improvements to how construction projects are estimated and delivered.

What You Will Do:

  • Lead and inspire full-stack engineering teams building the Paradigm Estimate product using React and TypeScript, creating intuitive interfaces for our digitization application.

  • Be seen as an expert within the technical components of the product and guide architecture decisions at the team and product level.

  • Assist in all aspects of the Agile Scrum process, ensuring managers run effective stand-ups, grooming and refinement discussions, and facilitating decision making across teams to deliver smooth, quality releases.

  • Define, scale, and optimize processes that improve the quality, delivery, and overall effectiveness of the teams you lead.

  • Collaborate closely with product and design teams to translate construction professional needs into elegant, user-centric interfaces that balance power with simplicity.

  • Uphold and reinforce engineering standards, including coding practices, design guidelines, and review quality, by setting expectations across teams and enabling managers to maintain consistency.

  • Drive end to end delivery of complex products and features, ensuring alignment with business objectives, timelines, and quality standards.

  • Manage the teamโ€™s long term technical roadmap, ensuring systems can scale and evolve.

  • Step in hands-on when needed to support architecture reviews, evaluate complex technical decisions, and guide teams through challenges involving performance optimization, scalability, documentation quality, and testing expectations.

  • Champion user-centric thinking for construction professionals; measure your teamsโ€™ success through adoption, performance metrics, user satisfaction, and workflow efficiency.

What You Need to Succeed:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Computer Science or a related field or an equal amount of related professional experience.

  • 10+ years of experience in software development with 3+ years of experience in people management. Experience leading a full-stack team building enterprise-grade web applications with strong execution, resilience, and business impact is preferred.

  • Desire to integrate workflow automation into engineering processes.

  • Deep proficiency in cloud platforms (Azure), including microservices, serverless patterns, CI/CD pipelines, and infrastructure as code.

  • Hands-on experience with backend technologies such as .NET, Node.js, or similar stacks, including REST and event-driven architectures.

  • Proven track record of delivering large-scale, distributed, or cloud-based systems.

  • Exceptional communication skills with the ability to translate technical topics to non-technical stakeholders, influence their decision making, and challenge the status quo when necessary.

  • Adaptability and resilience, including the capacity to navigate changing priorities, manage ambiguity, and help teams adjust to evolving business needs in a dynamic environment.

Beneficial Knowledge and Skills:

  • Domain expertise in construction, building products, or field service applications with an understanding of how construction professionals work and the workflows they depend on.

  • Hands-on experience with modern real-time collaboration or document automation platforms, such as Liveblocks.

  • Experience with agentic automation platforms such as n8n, Orkes, and Moveworks.
