What does an intermediate financial analyst do?

An Intermediate Financial Analyst typically analyzes financial data, prepares reports, and helps support business decisions by providing insights on financial performance. They often work with budgets, forecasts, and financial models, collaborating with other departments to interpret data and identify trends. These analysts may also assist in evaluating investment opportunities, monitoring expenses, and ensuring compliance with financial regulations. Their role bridges the gap between entry-level analysts and senior financial professionals, requiring a solid understanding of financial principles and strong analytical skills.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an intermediate financial analyst?

To thrive as an Intermediate Financial Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, a solid understanding of accounting principles, and typically a bachelor’s degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Proficiency in financial modeling, Microsoft Excel, and familiarity with ERP systems like SAP or Oracle, as well as certifications such as CFA or CPA, are often required. Attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities distinguish top performers in this role. These skills ensure accurate financial analysis, informed decision-making, and the ability to communicate complex information clearly to stakeholders.

What are some common challenges faced by intermediate financial analysts when transitioning from entry-level positions?

Intermediate Financial Analysts often encounter challenges such as taking on more complex financial modeling tasks, interpreting large data sets, and presenting findings to leadership. They are expected to move beyond basic reporting and contribute more strategically to budgeting, forecasting, and variance analysis. Additionally, intermediates may begin mentoring junior analysts and collaborating closely with cross-functional teams, which requires strong communication and project management skills.

The Intermediate Financial Analyst typically has more experience and responsibilities than a standard Financial Analyst, often handling more complex analysis and contributing to strategic decisions. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and certifications, but the Intermediate Financial Analyst is positioned as a step above entry-level positions, with greater involvement in financial planning and analysis.

Can I get an intermediate financial analyst job with no experience?

While some entry-level financial analyst positions may accept candidates with little or no experience, an intermediate financial analyst role typically requires prior experience in financial analysis, accounting, or related fields. Developing skills in Excel, financial modeling, and gaining relevant certifications like CFA can improve chances, but most employers expect some professional background for this level.

Job description

We are a leading manufacturer of premium, ready-to-eat link sausages and hot dogs. The company was founded in 2004 by four brothers, Chris, Joe, Mark, and Pete Salm. They partnered their individual talents together to create our organization, using the "partnership" concept as the cornerstone for our success. Since then, we have expanded and have two production plants with over 1,000 partners in Denmark, WI.  In 2023, Johnsonville purchased Salm Partners to help grow not only its own ready-to-eat sausage business, but the ready-to-eat sausage category as a whole.  The combination of the country's most trusted retail sausage brand (Johnsonville) with the industry leading manufacturer (Salm Partners) has created a world class organization. We are committed to growth as a company and to our partners!   Apply today and discover your opportunity to grow with us.

  • Help create simple, clear dashboards and turn numbers into a meaningful message; connect that message to themes people can easily relate to and understand.
  • Help with forecasting and the annual budgeting process for the Denmark campus and ensure that the facility processes are streamlined and align with overall company processes
  • Assist in ensuring that the facility cost savings pipelines meet expectations for current and future years
  • Partner with the Plant Controller to assess new business opportunities; help provide insights on proposed capital projects (like IRR, cost savings, and post-mortems) and productivity projects (focused on continuous improvement).
  • Identify best practices and collaborate with the Plant Controller to roll them out across the network
  • Support the development of procedures and controls to ensure accurate product costs and reliable inventory management
