Idaho Power - headquartered in vibrant Boise, Idaho - is looking for a Metering Engineer to join our Methods and Materials team. Our work plays a critical role in communities we serve across Idaho and Oregon, and we're working hard to safely provide our customers with the safe, reliable, affordable energy they depend on.

What does a Metering Engineer do for us?

Operating under minimal supervision and using independent initiative, the Metering Engineer is responsible for the meter hardware and software systems, application of metering technology, and problem resolution for all critical metering systems that ensure accurate energy consumption data that directly determines revenue for the Company. This position will be based at Idaho Power's Boise Operations Center.

This position is responsible for:

  • Developing technical specifications, guidelines, and work methods for the design and construction of electric metering systems
  • Researching and approving new metering equipment and materials
  • Staying current with industry standards, trends, and enhancements in metering equipment, materials, and tools, and make changes to improve safety, reliability, and/or efficiency
  • Programming revenue grade meters and associated communications systems
  • Implementing and improving quality controls to ensure revenue metering is accurate and timely
  • Providing consultation, guidance, and training to field employees, designers, customers, and other key stakeholders to ensure that proper electric metering design and construction practices are followed

Operating under general supervision and with oversight, an Engineer I is developing technical expertise in their field. This role plans and leads assignments and projects, may interface with internal departments and external organizations, and receives guidance from leaders and other engineers as needed.

Engineer II:
Operating under limited supervision, an Engineer II has an intermediate level of technical expertise in their field. This role plans and leads moderately complex assignments and projects, interfaces with internal departments and external organizations, and receives high-level guidance from leaders and other engineers as needed.

A COMPETITIVE CANDIDATE WILL HAVE

Knowledge of:

  • General engineering principles
  • Comprehensive, specific, and progressive knowledge related to discipline

Preferred:

  • Excellent knowledge of electrical engineering principles as they apply to metering design, layout, construction, and maintenance
  • Revenue meter programming principles and application including communications protocols (Modbus, RS232, Ethernet, modem, and RS485)
  • Advanced knowledge of electrical testing principles and processes
  • Electric utilities and their business environment
  • Safety practices and NESC, NEC, EUSERC requirements
  • Metering schematics including single-line and three-line diagrams

Skills in:

  • Troubleshooting
  • Interdisciplinary skills
  • Communication, both oral and written
  • Computers and software use
  • Producing technical reports

Preferred:

  • Troubleshooting and repair of high-end meter installations and metering test equipment
  • Programming and communication setup for Schneider Electric ION meters

  • Provide meter software, program, and meter technical training to field employees
  • Develop and implement meter quality control procedures and processes


MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Education:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited institution

OR

  • Bachelor in Engineering from a non-ABET accredited institution and a P.E. license

Preferred:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from an ABET accredited institution

Experience:

  • Engineer I - 0-2 years related experience
  • Engineer II - 2 or more years of related experience

Preferred:

  • Engineer I/II - Engineer in Training (EIT) designation
  • Previous experience applying electrical code (NESC and/or NEC)
  • Previous electrical metering experience along with experience programming and communication setup for Schneider Electric ION meters

Licenses & Certifications:

  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record based on driving requirements for the position

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Travel with out-of-town stays may be required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

This is an office position with occasional field work, it requires working at a desk/computer for extended periods of time. It requires the use of office equipment, fine motor skills including typing on the computer, dialing phones, filing paper, and working in close proximity to other people. There may be occasional lifts of no more than 10 lbs. Walking on even/uneven surfaces and ascents/descents, up to 5 miles daily, and while carrying 14-26 lbs. of equipment. Lifting of up to 36 lbs. and carrying up to 30 lbs., (up to 50 feet), is performed. Hiking/Snowshoeing is performed up to 1 mile. Climbing of ladders/racks and work within elevated lifts (up to 40 feet high) with competency in use of safety equipment is required. Rappelling is performed up to 20 times yearly. Squatting, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and lying at ground level is performed to work within confined spaces of power plants/dams/generators, for extended intervals up to a full shift. Driving is required to perform work throughout the IPC territory, (3-7 hours) The above is a summary of the primary essential functions of the position.
