What is an interlibrary loan assistant?

Interlibrary Loan Assistants are library staff members who coordinate the borrowing and lending of materials between libraries. They help patrons access books, articles, and other resources that are not available in their home library by processing requests, handling shipping and receiving, and maintaining records. Their work ensures that library users have access to a wider range of materials and supports academic and research needs. Interlibrary Loan Assistants often use specialized software and follow library protocols to facilitate these exchanges efficiently.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an interlibrary loan assistant?

To thrive as an Interlibrary Loan Assistant, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and familiarity with library practices, often supported by a high school diploma or library science coursework. Experience with integrated library systems (ILS), interlibrary loan management platforms like OCLC WorldShare, and document delivery tools is typically required. Excellent communication, customer service orientation, and problem-solving abilities help you efficiently manage requests and support library patrons. These skills ensure timely and accurate resource sharing, fostering collaboration between libraries and meeting user needs effectively.

What are some common challenges faced by interlibrary loan assistants, and how can they be managed?

Interlibrary Loan Assistants often encounter challenges such as managing high volumes of requests, tracking materials between multiple libraries, and adhering to varying lending policies.
