What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Interior Project Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interior Project Manager, you need strong project management skills, a background in interior design or architecture, and often a relevant degree or certification such as PMP. Familiarity with design software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit), project management tools (like MS Project or Asana), and knowledge of building codes are typically required. Exceptional communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help manage clients, teams, and contractors effectively. These skills are essential for delivering projects on time, within budget, and to the desired quality standards while meeting client expectations.

What are Interior Project Managers?

Interior Project Managers are professionals who oversee and coordinate the planning, design, and execution of interior spaces in residential, commercial, or institutional projects. They work closely with clients, designers, contractors, and vendors to ensure that projects are completed on time, within budget, and according to the specified design standards. Their responsibilities include budgeting, scheduling, quality control, and problem-solving throughout the project lifecycle. Interior Project Managers play a crucial role in ensuring the vision for a space is realized efficiently and effectively.

How does an Interior Project Manager typically collaborate with clients and design teams throughout a project?

An Interior Project Manager serves as a crucial bridge between clients and design teams, ensuring clear communication and alignment of project goals. They facilitate regular meetings to gather client feedback, coordinate design revisions, and manage expectations regarding timelines and budgets. This role often requires balancing creative input from designers with practical considerations from contractors and vendors, all while keeping the client's vision at the forefront. Strong interpersonal skills and proactive problem-solving are key to successfully navigating these collaborations.

Job description

Senior Interior Designer – Grand Rapids, MIDISHER is partnering with a small, commercial interior design firm that also procures and resells furniture to find a Senior Interior Designer to join their growing team. This experienced designer will own projects from concept through construction, leading client-facing design efforts and helping shape the future of this practice with close ties to a sister architecture firm. In this role, you’ll be a thought leader on interior projects, bringing structure, creativity, and executional excellence to a fast-paced environment.

What it's like to work here:
This is a tight-knit team with a flexible and entrepreneurial environment—policies are light, the workload is high, and success comes from self-management, collaboration, and a willingness to wear multiple hats in support of the firm and its clients. You’ll work closely with an aligned architecture partner while still enjoying the breadth, autonomy, and impact that come from being part of a small, evolving design studio.
What you'll get to do:
  • Lead interior design projects from concept through construction, including programming, space planning, and development of conceptual ideas for commercial environments.

  • Create and refine design narratives that connect brand, user experience, and function, and present those stories professionally to clients and stakeholders.

  • Develop and manage project workflows and timelines, coordinating your own work across multiple concurrent projects in a fast-paced setting.

  • Produce detailed design documentation in Revit, and support visualization through renderings and other tools as needed.

  • Collaborate closely with architects, engineers, contractors, and furniture dealers to ensure design intent is carried through construction.

  • Engage across a variety of commercial project types, with a focus on education and healthcare and an expanding footprint in retail, hospitality, and related markets.

  • Contribute to furniture planning and coordination, including working with dealers and supporting the firm’s growing procurement capabilities.

What will make you successful:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or a related field from an accredited institution; NCIDQ certification and related credentials are strongly preferred.

  • Approximately 10+ years of professional experience, ideally 12–15 years overall with at least 4–5 recent years leading commercial interior projects from concept through construction.

  • Significant experience within an architecture or commercial interior design firm, with a portfolio that includes institutional work in education and/or healthcare.

  • Strong proficiency in Revit, with additional experience in tools such as Enscape, Adobe Creative Suite, SketchUp, Bluebeam, and CET considered a plus.

  • Demonstrated experience working with furniture dealers and planning furniture layouts, finishes, and specifications in commercial settings.

  • Proven ability to manage your own time and workload in a high‑volume, flexible environment without heavy supervision.

  • Eager, adaptable, and comfortable wearing multiple hats—bringing both strategic thinking and hands-on execution to a small, collaborative team.

  • Strong communicator and team player who values supporting coworkers, building relationships, and contributing to the long-term growth of the firm.
