What is an interior plant design?

An Interior Plant Design job involves selecting, arranging, and maintaining plants to enhance indoor spaces aesthetically and functionally. Designers consider lighting, space, and plant care requirements to create harmonious and sustainable plant displays. They work in homes, offices, hotels, and other commercial spaces to improve air quality and ambiance. This role requires knowledge of plant species, design principles, and maintenance practices.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of an interior plant designer?

As an Interior Plant Designer, your day generally involves meeting with clients to discuss their needs, surveying spaces to assess lighting and environmental conditions, and selecting appropriate plants and containers. You’ll design plant arrangements, coordinate installation with suppliers or contractors, and provide maintenance recommendations. Collaboration with property managers, architects, and interior designers is common to ensure plant designs integrate smoothly with broader decor plans. This hands-on, client-facing role requires both creative problem-solving and practical horticultural knowledge to deliver vibrant, sustainable indoor environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in interior plant design, and why are they important?

To thrive in Interior Plant Design, you need a solid understanding of horticulture, spatial planning, and design principles, typically enhanced by experience in landscaping or interior decorating. Familiarity with tools such as AutoCAD, plant care management software, and knowledge of safe handling of various plants are often required. Creativity, customer service orientation, and attention to detail are crucial soft skills in this field. These abilities are essential to create aesthetically pleasing, healthy, and functional green spaces that meet client expectations and thrive in diverse interior environments.

Job description

Collective Design is seeking a Lead Interior Designer to join our team in Frisco, Colorado. We create bespoke luxury residences throughout the Mountain West, from custom mountain homes to comprehensive whole-home renovations, where every element from finishes to the final furnishings are chosen with intention. Our projects typically range from 3,000 to 10,000+ square feet, with clients who are deeply invested in the process and the outcome. The mountains are right outside the door, and so is some of the most meaningful design work of your career.
The Role
This is a hands-on project leadership role within our design studio. You will guide projects from initial concept through final installation, own client relationships at the highest level, oversee fixed finishes and furnishings to delivery, and mentor the designers on your team. You will be supported by an experienced executive and operations team so that your focus remains where it belongs: on the work.
What You Will Own
  • Project Leadership: Guide the full design process from concept and schematic design through finish selection, construction documentation, and installation on luxury custom homes and comprehensive renovations throughout the Mountain region.
  • FF&E Specification and Procurement: Own the fixed finishes and furnishings process with rigor and intention, including finish and material selection, vendor sourcing, budgeting, specification tracking, purchase orders, and white-glove installation oversight.
  • Client Experience: Serve as the primary point of contact. Present concepts with clarity and confidence, steward scope and budget with transparency, and deliver an exceptional, high-touch experience at every stage.
  • Team Mentorship: Provide clear direction and meaningful feedback to senior and associate designers. Uphold highest standards of quality and craft while cultivating a collaborative, accountable studio culture.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Partner closely with architects, builders, and vendors to protect design integrity and ensure seamless project delivery.

Who You Are
  • You bring 6 or more years of experience in high-end residential interior design, with a strong foundation in FF&E including finish and material selection, full specification, procurement, and installation oversight.
  • You are comfortable with construction documentation and able to navigate complex, multi-phase projects with technical confidence. Proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit is preferred. We are more interested in how you think spatially than which program you use to get there.
  • You have led client relationships independently and confidently present to clients and with decisiveness and genuine design authority.
  • You care about the people around you. Mentoring and elevating others is something you consider part of the role, not separate from it.
  • You thrive where the standard is high, accountability is real, and the work is something you are proud to put your name on.

This role is based in Frisco, Colorado, a mountain town at 9,000 feet surrounded by some of the finest skiing, hiking, cycling, and climbing in North America. The clients we serve have chosen this region intentionally, and so has our team. If you have been looking for a reason to plant yourself somewhere extraordinary, this might be it.
What We Offer
Competitive pay ranging from $86,000 - $125,000 inclusive of volume-based performance incentives, based on experience & skill level.
  • 3 weeks of Paid Time Off annually
  • 16 Paid Volunteer hours per year, because giving back to this community matters to us
  • Health Insurance with a 100% employer-paid option available, with Dental and Vision options
  • Employee Stock Ownership Program. This is not a checkbox benefit. It means you have a real stake in the success of what we are building together
  • Annual Team Trip to Mexico - Strengthen team bonds while creating unforgettable experiences
  • $500 annual tool and technology allowance, $50 monthly cell phone reimbursement, and mileage allowance when applicable
