Job Purpose:
Lead and oversee the work of the Course Builders and Quality Assurance team, ensuring alignment with institutional standards and project timelines. Participate actively in the recruitment, onboarding, and continuous development of team members. Manage course assignments, monitor development progress, validate course shells and templates, and authorize the release of courses to the production environment. In the absence of the Director, the Lead may represent the department in meetings or special initiatives.

Job Description:

The Lead of Instructional Design (ID Lead) reports directly to the Director of Instructional Design. This role is responsible for guiding the team in all tasks related to course development, quality assurance, and deployment to the Learning Management System (LMS). The ID Lead ensures adherence to instructional design models and quality standards established by the Director, and stays current with learning theories, design methodologies, and emerging technologies. Leadership experience and team management skills are essential.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide strategic leadership and daily oversight to Course Builders and Quality Assurance staff.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to define and monitor monthly course development plans.
  • Support the Director in planning and prioritizing new course development initiatives in Canvas.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve instructional design or course material issues reported by students and faculty.
  • Research and recommend innovative technologies to enhance instructional design practices.
  • Ensure timely release of courses to production according to established timelines.
  • Generate and present progress reports on course development status.
  • Mentor and support instructional designers and course builders, especially in high-pressure or emergency situations.
  • Co-lead special projects with the Director and contribute to cross-functional initiatives.
  • Foster collaboration with other departments to ensure instructional goals are met.
  • Assess staffing needs and recommend hiring of new personnel or consultants.
  • Design and coordinate onboarding and professional development for new and existing team members.
  • Advise on the selection and implementation of technologies, platforms, and tools for course development.
  • Maintain professional expertise through ongoing education, networking, and certification.
  • Participate in faculty development and institutional training sessions.
Skills & Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field; Master’s degree in Teaching, or Education required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in academic or educational management.
  • Strong conceptual and strategic thinking abilities.
  • Proficiency in LMS platforms and course authoring tools.
  • Ability to learn and apply new technologies effectively.
  • Proven experience in team leadership and personnel management.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in dynamic environments.
