Position Overview

The Interior Designer is responsible for designing both beautiful and functional interior spaces for all aspects of residential design. You’ll be responsible for creating an array of schematic design options as well as presenting and purchasing all interior finishes (this includes ordering cabinetry, plumbing fixtures, tile, lighting/etc.). Must be a team player with exceptional organization and communication skills; this is paramount to the success of the Melton Design Build team. Must be comfortable with clearly communicating design ideas/intentions with clients and peers. Projects include remodels, additions, and new builds.

Duties / Responsibilities

  • Design kitchen, bath, and other remodel/addition projects.
  • Develop creative design solutions that balance aesthetics, functionality, constructability, and budget.
  • Create schematic design options, space plans, and preliminary design drawings through hand sketches and/or computer-generated plans.
  • Lead clients through the design process, helping them make informed and confident decisions.
  • Clearly present design concepts, material selections, and finish packages through professional presentations and visual tools.
  • Ensure clients receive design options that align with established project budgets and priorities.
  • Specify cabinetry, plumbing fixtures, tile, lighting, hardware, countertops, flooring, and other interior finishes.
  • Maintain comprehensive product selection documentation for each project.
  • Apply strong product knowledge to recommend appropriate materials, products, and solutions for specific applications and budgets.
  • Review drawings and specifications for accuracy and coordination of interior finishes.
  • Develop and maintain expertise in custom and semi-custom cabinetry lines, including specifications, construction methods, and pricing.
  • Prepare cabinetry layouts, pricing, and specifications using 2020 Design software.
  • Generate accurate quotes and purchase orders for cabinetry, tile, plumbing fixtures, lighting, hardware, and related materials.
  • Coordinate with vendors, trade partners, and internal teams throughout the design and procurement process.
  • Support the maintenance of the Design Center, including sample management, display updates, and vendor pricing updates.
  • Participate in periodic site visits and construction meetings to ensure design intent is executed successfully.

Skills & Qualifications

  • Strong understanding of the residential design-build process.
  • Excellent listening skills and ability to translate client goals into successful design solutions.
  • Strong presentation and client-facing communication skills.
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management abilities with the capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Keen attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
  • Strong design sensibility with the ability to balance creativity, practicality, and budget considerations.
  • Interest in staying current with evolving design trends, materials, and technologies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and Word).
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Suite and SketchUp.
  • Experience with rendering software such as Enscape, SketchUp, or Revit preferred.
  • Proficiency with 2020 Design software for cabinetry layout and pricing preferred.

Education & Experience

  • Degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, or a related field.
  • 2 - 4 years of residential interior design experience.
  • 2 - 4 years of experience in kitchen and bath design, finish selections, specifications, and procurement.
  • Experience with space planning, schematic design, design development, and construction documentation.
  • Experience working within a residential design-build environment preferred.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting, standing, and working on a computer.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials and samples up to 15 pounds.
  • Ability to travel to client homes, project sites, vendor showrooms, and industry events as needed.
  • Ability to safely navigate active construction sites and varying weather conditions.

Core Values & Contributing Behaviors
