To thrive as an Interior Design Architect, you need a strong background in architectural design, spatial planning, and a degree in architecture or interior design, often supported by professional licensure. Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, and SketchUp, as well as familiarity with building codes and sustainable design standards, is typically required. Creative problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for collaborating with clients and multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure aesthetically pleasing, functional, and safe spaces that meet client needs and regulatory requirements.

What is the difference between Interior Design Architect vs Interior Designer?

AspectInterior Design ArchitectInterior Designer

Industry UsageWorks on both architectural and interior elements, often in construction projectsPrimarily on interior aesthetics and space optimization

While both roles involve creating functional and attractive interior spaces, Interior Design Architects combine architectural knowledge with interior design skills, often working on comprehensive projects that include structural elements. Interior Designers focus more on aesthetics, furnishings, and space planning without architectural responsibilities.

What are the common challenges an Interior Design Architect faces when working on multidisciplinary teams?

Interior Design Architects often collaborate closely with engineers, contractors, and clients, which can present challenges such as aligning creative vision with technical constraints and budget limitations. Effective communication is crucial to ensure that design intentions are clearly understood and feasible within project parameters. Additionally, balancing aesthetic goals with functional requirements—like safety codes or sustainability standards—requires flexibility and problem-solving skills. Navigating these intersections is essential for delivering successful projects and building strong professional relationships.

What does an Interior Design Architect do?

An Interior Design Architect specializes in designing and planning the interior spaces of buildings, focusing on aesthetics, functionality, and safety. They work closely with clients to understand their needs and create spatial layouts, select materials, and coordinate color schemes. Their work often involves collaboration with other architects, engineers, and contractors to ensure that interior designs meet building codes and project requirements. Interior Design Architects also oversee the implementation of their designs, ensuring that the final result aligns with the client’s vision.

Job description

Join the 2025 AIA Firm Award Winner shaping a more sustainable future.
LPA is a collective of designers, engineers, and researchers committed to tackling the biggest issues of our time. Our "No Excuses" integrated design approach was recognized by the AIA as "a trailblazer in sustainable, high-performance architecture". At LPA you'll be part of the team that is changing the way the industry thinks about design and carbon emissions, built around the belief that we only achieve our goals when everybody has a seat at the table and all input is valued.
We're currently seeking an Interior Design Coordinator to join our dynamic Workplace team. You'll be part of a culture that values deep collaboration, technical excellence, and continual growth. Our Workplace studio is committed to creating engaging environments that foster communication and collaboration. We have completed projects such as Edwards Lifescience Campus Expansion, Southland Industries and Technology Company HQ Wellness Center.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams across our studios-and help bring high-performance, community-first design to life.
What You'll Do:
  • Collaborate closely with architects, engineers, and designers as part of LPA's integrated, multidisciplinary design process.
  • Take ownership of projects from concept through completion, contributing across all phases of design and delivery.
  • Partner with Project Managers and Project Designers to execute project tasks, including coordinating and overseeing interior documentation.
  • Prepare and manage design development and construction documentation to ensure quality, accuracy, and consistency.
  • Lead and oversee the production work of junior designers, providing guidance and quality control.
  • Review, coordinate, and process construction administration documents throughout the construction phase.
  • Conduct and organize research on materials, products, and construction methods to support design solutions.
  • Receive mentorship from project leaders and managing directors while actively mentoring and supporting the professional growth of junior designers.

What We Offer:
At LPA, your growth and contributions matter. We foster a collaborative culture where creative ideas are valued, and voices are heard.
  • Mentorship from Managing Directors, Design Directors, and senior team members across disciplines.
  • Career development support, including licensure incentives, professional development grants, and in-house training.
  • Ongoing education through LPA+U courses and Tech Talks focused on innovative, sustainable practices.
  • 8 paid hours of volunteer time each year.
  • Opportunities to propose and lead projects that impact your local community, including more than $1 million since 2015 in Habitat for Humanity builds, scholarships, and other pro bono community projects.
  • Access to our Professional Development Grants program, created to encourage professional development and further LPA's collective knowledge as a firm. Over the life of the grant program, we have invested $1,196,890 and impacted 848 LPA employees.

What We're Looking For:
Required:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Interior Design, Architecture, or Interior Architecture.
  • 5+ years of professional experience across all phases of interior architecture projects.
  • Actively pursuing CID certification (or currently certified) and LEED accreditation.
  • Proficiency in Revit; working knowledge of Rhino and Adobe Creative Suite preferred.
  • Strong understanding of building codes, applicable regulations, construction materials, and specifications.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently with creativity, innovation, and design vision throughout programming, design, and project execution.
  • Commitment to producing high-quality, well-coordinated construction documentation.

LPA is an integrated design firm with offices in California and Texas. We specialize in creating innovative, sustainable environments that work better, do more with less and improve people's lives. We provide a vibrant and rewarding work environment-one that values and fosters creativity, collaboration, critical thinking, community engagement and ongoing career development and growth. LPA is also committed to diversity, wellness and work-life balance. LPA offers competitive salaries and generous benefits, including health and dental insurance, retirement and financial, wellness and other work/life plans.
If you are hired at LPA, your base salary is based on factors such as geographic location, skills, education, experience and/or project complexity. We believe in the importance of pay equity and consider internal equity of our current team members as part of any final offer.
