Job description

Title: Interim CFO/Controller

Type: Contract

Length: 3-6 months

Compensation: $55 – $70 / hour

Location: Alexandria, VA

A well-established organization in Northern Virginia is seeking an experienced Interim Chief Financial Officer / Controller to provide financial leadership during a transitional period. This individual will oversee the day-to-day finance and accounting function, lead a small team, and ensure critical financial operations continue without disruption while supporting key strategic initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and oversight for all finance and accounting operations, ensuring continuity during an executive transition.
  • Lead the completion of the annual operating budget and long-range financial planning process.
  • Manage fiscal year-end close activities and coordinate required financial reporting with external stakeholders.
  • Prepare and present monthly financial statements and reporting packages for executive leadership and the Board of Directors.
  • Oversee the month-end close process, general ledger, financial reporting, and internal accounting operations.
  • Partner with external agencies and organizational leadership on financial matters, reporting requirements, and budget initiatives.
  • Support procurement and RFP-related financial activities as needed.
  • Mentor and support payroll operations while ensuring continuity across finance functions.
  • Identify opportunities to strengthen financial processes, internal controls, and operational efficiency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 8 years of progressive, hands-on finance and accounting experience.
  • Prior leadership experience managing accounting and finance teams.
  • Demonstrated experience overseeing budgeting, financial reporting, month-end close, and year-end financial activities.
  • Strong communication, relationship management, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to lead effectively in a fast-paced, evolving environment while collaborating with a variety of stakeholders.
