Job description

Interconnection Manager

Who we are

Elia Grid International (EGI) is a global power systems consultancy driving innovation and excellence across the global energy sector. Building on the expertise of Elia Group (Belgium) and 50Hertz (Germany), EGI delivers strategic, technical, and regulatory advisory services to tackle complex challenges of the energy transition.

With offices in Belgium, Germany, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Canada, and the USA, EGI partners with clients across the globe to deliver high-impact projects in power system planning, smart grids design & digitalization, asset management, HVDC, FACTS, and renewable integration.

As we continue to scale up and expand internationally, our ambition is to become a global leader in power systems consultancy, helping build resilient and sustainable energy systems worldwide.

Your function

EGI is reinforcing its U.S.-based infrastructure team to support major transmission, interconnection and project development opportunities. We are looking for an experienced Interconnection Manager to lead the interconnection strategy for major transmission, HVDC/HVAC, renewable integration and grid infrastructure projects.

This is both a technical coordination and development-support role. The Interconnection Manager will manage interconnection processes, lead the follow-up of system impact and facilities studies, support technical negotiations with ISOs/RTOs, utilities and transmission owners, and translate interconnection outcomes into clear project implications.

You will be accountable for advancing interconnection activities in alignment with the overall project strategy, commercial objectives, regulatory framework, schedule, cost exposure and execution readiness.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the project’s interconnection strategy, including interconnection applications, study agreements, system impact studies, facilities studies, interconnection agreements, technical assumptions and interface management.
  • Manage and coordinate interconnection processes with ISOs/RTOs, utilities, transmission owners, system operators, project developers and other relevant stakeholders.
  • Support the preparation, submission and follow-up of interconnection requests, study scopes, technical documentation, network upgrade assessments and related agreements.
  • Review system impact studies, facilities studies, network upgrade requirements, cost allocation assumptions, operating constraints, reliability requirements and schedule implications.
  • Advance study outcomes by coordinating internal experts, external consultants, utilities, transmission owners and project stakeholders around clear assumptions, open issues, technical positions and decision points.
  • Support technical negotiations with ISOs/RTOs, utilities and transmission owners, ensuring alignment with project strategy, commercial objectives, regulatory requirements, cost exposure and execution feasibility.
  • Translate interconnection study results into clear project implications, including technical requirements, design impacts, schedule risks, cost exposure, regulatory obligations and mitigation actions.
  • Coordinate closely with HVDC/HVAC leads, system studies experts, project managers, legal advisors, commercial teams and external consultants to ensure integrated project delivery.
  • Identify and manage risks related to interconnection queue position, study assumptions, network upgrades, facilities requirements, technical constraints, cost exposure, regulatory obligations and execution schedule.
  • Support RFP responses, project development activities, technical due diligence, investment decision processes and client advisory work by providing clear interconnection strategies, assumptions, risks and recommendations.
  • Contribute to the development of EGI’s U.S. interconnection expertise, methodologies, stakeholder relationships and strategic positioning in key ISO/RTO and utility markets.
  • Ensure that interconnection activities are carried out in accordance with applicable standards, project governance requirements, quality expectations, regulatory requirements and financial objectives.

    Required qualifications

    • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering or a related discipline.
    • Typically 7+ years of professional experience in interconnection management, transmission planning, grid studies, project development, system operations, utility engineering or related fields.
    • Strong knowledge of U.S. power system interconnection processes, ISO/RTO procedures, transmission planning, utility processes, grid connection requirements and project development.
    • Experience managing or supporting interconnection applications, system impact studies, facilities studies, interconnection agreements, technical negotiations or transmission owner coordination.
    • Experience with one or more U.S. ISO/RTO or utility interconnection processes, such as CAISO, NYISO, PJM, ISO-NE, MISO, ERCOT, SPP or relevant utility-led interconnection processes.
    • Good understanding of transmission systems, network upgrades, reliability criteria, power flow studies, substation interfaces, protection requirements, operating constraints and project development risks.
    • Ability to interpret technical study results and translate them into project risks, commercial implications, design requirements, schedule impacts and decision points.
    • Strong stakeholder management skills and ability to interact credibly with ISOs/RTOs, utilities, transmission owners, project developers, engineering teams, legal advisors and senior project leadership.
    • Structured, proactive and able to manage complex processes with multiple stakeholders, deadlines, technical dependencies and regulatory interfaces.
    • Fluency in English and willingness to travel within the U.S. and internationally as required.

    Preferred qualifications

    • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering, Energy Systems or a related discipline.
    • Experience in large-scale transmission, HVDC, renewable energy, storage, offshore wind, data center interconnection or grid infrastructure projects.
    • Experience supporting RFP responses, project development, technical due diligence or investment decision processes.
    • Existing professional network with U.S. ISOs/RTOs, utilities, transmission owners, developers or relevant market participants.

    Location & Work Arrangement

    • U.S.-based role (preferably California or East Coast, New York area)
    • Hybrid or remote, with regular travel to client sites, projects, and EGI offices. Typically 25–40%, depending on projects and business development

    Work Authorization
    Candidates must be authorised to work in the U.S. Visa sponsorship may be considered depending on profile and business needs.

    Compensation and benefits
    Final compensation will depend on location, experience, qualifications, and seniority. EGI offers a competitive benefits package, which includes health insurance, retirement benefits, paid time off, professional development opportunities, international project exposure and performance-based incentives, subject to applicable company policies and local employment arrangements.

    What we offer

    • Permanent or freelance employment in a fast-growing international power systems consultancy;
    • Attractive salary package and an extensive array of fringe benefits;
    • Exposure to major U.S. and international transmission, interconnection and energy transition projects;
    • Opportunity to contribute directly to the development of EGI’s U.S. platform and international infrastructure business;
    • Unique training, personal development and growth opportunities;

    At EGI, we value diversity and inclusion. We are firmly committed to promoting gender equality in all aspects of our organization, from recruitment to professional development. We believe that diverse teams are more creative, innovative, and high-performing. Join us to contribute to an environment where everyone has equal opportunities for growth and fulfilment.

    Choose EGI and help us guide the worldwide power sector into a future of clean and sustainable energy, smarter and more flexible grids, decentralized production and HVDC systems that span across seas and land to interconnect countries, regions, and different energy markets for the benefit of generations to come.
