Job Summary:

Performs a wide variety of complex immunohistochemical and histological procedures on various tissue specimens to assist pathologists in making a correct diagnosis of patients' diseases or conditions. Responsible for prioritizing testing procedures and completing those procedures in an accurate and timely manner. Must maintain proper records of testing performed in accordance with established policies, procedures and regulations. Coordinates activities of students, residents and fellows in training.

Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
  • Perform microtomy for routine H&E stains, frozen sections, special stains, IF, neuromuscular, Mohs, and IHC testing.
  • Performs special stains, IHC, IF, neuromuscular and various manual stains.
  • Correctly orients and embeds tissue into paraffin blocks. Capable of embedding multiple tissue sections on the same plane within one cassette.
  • Operates and performs maintenance on various instruments in the laboratory. Maintains adequate supplies replacing them prior to expiration date.
  • Proficient understanding of the CAP checklist. Insures compliance with CLIA 88 and CAP regulations.
  • Works efficiently as a team member to assure work is completed to meet required turnaround times and delivered to the surgical pathology department.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
  • Complies with all Wellstar Health System policies, standards of work, and code of conduct.
Required Minimum Education:
  • High School Diploma / GED General or Accredited Program Health Science
Required Minimum License(s) and Certification(s):

All certifications are required upon hire unless otherwise stated.

  • HT(ASCP) - Histotechnician or HT(ASCP)-P - Histotechnician - Provisional (1-1/2 Yrs) within 2 years
Additional License(s) and Certification(s):

HT (ASCP), HTL (ASCP), MT (ASCP), or QIHC (Obtain within 18 months of hire if not certified at time of hire) within 1-1/2 Yrs Required or

Required Minimum Experience:

Education clarification: Associate's degree in science related field required. Required and Minimum 4 years clinical or research laboratory setting, or HT (ASCP), HTL (ASCP), MT (ASCP) certification at time of hire. Required or Minimum 4 years Histology Preferred

Required Minimum Skills:

Previous experience in microtomy is a plus. High
