What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Integrated Structural Concepts Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Integrated Structural Concepts Engineer, you need a solid background in structural engineering principles, advanced mathematics, and a relevant engineering degree, often with a PE licensure. Proficiency in CAD software, finite element analysis tools, and familiarity with industry standards such as ASCE or AISC codes is essential. Strong problem-solving, teamwork, and communication skills set exceptional candidates apart in this collaborative and innovative field. These skills ensure the design of safe, efficient, and cost-effective structures that meet both technical requirements and client needs.

What is the difference between Integrated Structural Concepts vs Structural Engineer?

AspectIntegrated Structural ConceptsStructural Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in structural engineering or related field; may include certifications like PERequires a degree in civil or structural engineering; PE license often necessary
Work EnvironmentDesign firms, consulting agencies, construction sitesDesign offices, construction sites, consulting firms
Industry UsageUsed in project planning, design, and consulting for structural systemsInvolved in designing, analyzing, and overseeing structural projects
Common Search/ComparisonOften compared in design and consulting contextsCompared in engineering design and project management

Integrated Structural Concepts typically refers to a design approach or consulting service focusing on structural systems, while Structural Engineer is a licensed professional responsible for designing and analyzing structures. Both roles often overlap in credentials and work environments, but the former emphasizes integrated design solutions, whereas the latter emphasizes engineering analysis and certification.

What are Integrated Structural Concepts?

Integrated Structural Concepts refers to the holistic approach in engineering and architecture where structural systems are designed in close coordination with other building disciplines, such as mechanical, electrical, and architectural design. This concept emphasizes collaboration and the use of advanced tools and methodologies to ensure that structures are safe, efficient, and optimized for performance and sustainability. By integrating various disciplines early in the design process, potential conflicts are minimized and innovative solutions can be implemented, resulting in better project outcomes.

What are some typical projects and team collaborations involved in an Integrated Structural Concepts role?

Professionals working in Integrated Structural Concepts often engage in multidisciplinary projects that require close collaboration with architects, civil engineers, and construction teams. Daily tasks may include reviewing design specifications, conducting structural analysis, and participating in project meetings to ensure that structural solutions align with both aesthetic and functional requirements. The role frequently involves problem-solving sessions to address design challenges and coordinating with various stakeholders throughout a project's lifecycle. This collaborative environment not only fosters learning but also opens up opportunities for career advancement into project management or specialized technical roles.

Structures Design Lead

Executive Recruiting Group

Boulder, CO โ€ข On-site, Remote

Full-time

Job description

We are looking for an experienced structures design leader to lead our structures design team from conceptual design through certification of our large,ย manned, Part 25 clean-sheetย aircraft. This role would entail leading structural design efforts for one or several structural zones including fuselage, cabin pressure vessel, empennage, or secondary structure, with accountability for the design lifecycle of the assigned area including structural architecture, producibility, ease of assembly and maintenance, and certification support. An ideal candidate will bring strong experience with composite and metallic structural design concepts and will be a hands-on Catia user who serves as a technical example for the team, directly creating and developing aircraft structural design content while coordinating closely with manufacturing engineering and other stakeholders to ensure designs are robust, producible, and aligned to our aircraft requirements.

ย This position can be remote with travel but ideally would like someone in the Colorado area.

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the structures design team from preliminary through detail design, build, and certificationย
  • Provide technical leadership across internal teams and adjacent engineering functions to deliver integrated structural design solutionsย
  • Own interface management and coordination across the structural design scopeย
  • Lead across manufacturing,ย systems,ย and other engineering stakeholders to ensure designs are producible and aligned with architecture and requirementsย

Requirements

Requiredย Qualifications:

  • 10+ years of related experience in aerospace engineering, with structural design leadership preferredย
  • Bachelors orย Mastersย degree in Aerospace or Mechanicalย engineering or equivalentย
  • 5+ years leading teams of design engineers and/or cross-functional structural teamsย
  • Significant hands-on experience using Catia v5/v6 or 3DEXPERIENCE for aerospace structural design, including direct part, assembly, and geometry development; recognized as a heavy Catia user and technical leader for the teamย
  • Experience working in cross-functional development environments through major design and certification milestonesย
  • Experience working with external partners and suppliers on development projectsย

Desiredย Technicalย Skills:ย

  • Experience withย aircraftย conceptual development / pre-Preliminary Design Review phase through certificationย
  • Composite and metallic structures design experienceย
  • Working knowledge of structural sizing methods, hand calculations, and finite element analysis sufficient to evaluate structural concepts and guide the team, with primary emphasis on design leadership rather than detailed analysis ownershipย
  • Experience supporting structural test planning andย structural testing at element throughย aircraftย assembly levelย
  • Strong certification knowledge and experience with CFR Part 25 desired (Part 23 is OK)ย
  • Experience in writing and reviewing system level requirementsย
  • At least 500h experience with requirements management tools such as Jama or Doorsย
  • Strong experience with Catia v5/v6 or 3DEXPERIENCE and PLM tools such as Teamcenter, Windchill, or Enovia, including frequent direct creation and modification of parts and assemblies, generating section cuts, interrogating geometry, and use of routine PLM functions such as lock/unlock and releasing filesย

Softย Skills:

  • Creative, curious, methodical, and detail-orientedย
  • Works well in a collaborative environment and leads effectively across multiple teams and companiesย
  • Strong designย judgment and problem-solving skills, with the ability to balance technical rigor, simplicity, and program needsย
  • Approaches problem solving with a holistic view across design, manufacturing, certification, and integrationย
  • Strong communicationย skills and can easily tailor communication to suit the audienceย
